The DC books back in the day gave a receipe that worked for that particular engine/wt. car. Fact.
You take that formular and increase compression, and his better heads (which you have?), where will you be? How much faster?

318willrun is doing what keeps us all alive and going, that is DREAMING. When we stop dreaming, we stop living. He has a dream, a vision, and trying to make a plan. His exercise here will eventually show all what can be accomplished with X amount of $ and a certain amount of work!!! For the old guy that has been there and done it, this whole deal might not be a interesting as it can be to the guy, younger or older, that has never attempted and accomplished such!!
Dreaming is fun!!!

I know a mopar racer that has a fleet of RRs, he buys 8" converters at the swap meets and has good luck doing it. I've only bought one used TA J converter for $150, it works great.

This is how I've enjoyed the hobby for 34 years of owning mopars! I set a bunch of "what if" type of goals, and then go have fun. I've never done the obvious, ho-hum build. Whether it was a /6 build or a big block build, A body or C body. Some people mistake this as "I don't know better" or "I don't know how". They be dead wrong. LOL.

I know the 2295 trw pistons with stock factory pins are very close to stock 8.2 to 1 pistons. done this before without balancing with no problems. The 2295s have much heavier pins than stock. They come up used on ebay occasionally.

To buy the equivalent converter today that would have been used in those MP cam tests(TA J or 8”)would be about $1000.

$5000 is a very low budget for 10 second Mopar ride.

I see used stuff out the every other day for a little more than a super hole shot convertor.

I mean, this is down right cool to me.... Good ole' Cordoba gett'n er' done!!!

If a Doba or Volare is a consideration, think about getting with the FMRJ guys and network, those things come up cheap all the time up where there is a population of people. Frame rust can be the big issue.

I prefer to call them Direct Connection tests. lol
I'm sorta stuck, I bypassed the Mopar Performance era. :D

They will tell you how the values have come up especially for rust free examples.

I have several F bodies and I watch the FB F body sites. Here in Tx rust free example can be found occasionally, drivers for $1000-1500 rust free, or little rust, slant to 318 RR, NO superCoupes though for that! They are scarce in Tx but more pop up in the populated states. I have seen their value rise in the last few years I agree.
I have a rust free 318 complete 77 Volare wagon I gave $500 with a perfect ($3-400) grill, complete non runner. It hasn't sold here priced at $500 with a broken but repairable grill!!! lol .... IF it was a Chevy!!!!!! lol

Hang me now. LOL
The year was 1980 my daily driver was a cherry 1963 Dart with a worn out slant and 3 on the tree, 2 quarts of oil per 100 miles " The Blue Streak "
The time had come as my 67 Fastback was road worthy with the new 383 conversion.
So I drove the Dart to Forrest wrecking in Lewiston, Id, pulled right up in this cherry Dart turned over the key and didn't even take the battery out. lol It's all yours free !
Several weeks later I returned to retrieve a door for the 71 Charger, they loaded me in my old 63 Dart now with no roof or trunk lid all loaded up with cutting torches and tools. We retrieved the door and with some nerve they charged me 80 bucks for the door.
I paid 100 bucks for the cherry Dart and drove the sh.. out of it.
Man I was stupid back then, Sorry 318wilrun

For a fact, nice examples of 2 door Aspens/Volares/Diplomats/Lebarons/Mirada have soared in price. Especially in my part of the country. We can still land a 4 door version that is a solid good driver for around 1000-1200 bucks if a guy has patience. Of course, all the rust free cars that folks have been talk'n about are ALWAYS 1000 miles+ away.

I bought my 76 Fbody in 88 with 73k on it for $150 and sold the /6 for $100. Found a pair of warranty fenders for $20, I got both quarters and a new grill for less than $300. All the paint and materials were donated by jobbers I bought from. At the time there was two other 440 Fbodys running at the local track.(1989)

LOL... maybe this is my cheapest way???? '71 Duster, 440, 8.75 with 4.10 gears, 4000 dollars :) Hasn't had it to the strip, but says it's a hard running 440. Maybe I'd go 10.99 for under 5k ?? :D

Looks like a damn good head start!!

That $4000 may not be “firm” either.

Plus...... when you got tired of it, probably easier to recoup your $$$ compared to a gutted 4 door Diplomat.

needs a little work to be a street car though... head lights, blinkers, a couple things like that

where is it located and why don't you have it yet ! Hell of a good start !!!

It's about 6 hrs from me. I still work about 50 hrs a week, so I can't leisure on over today or anything... LOL. Besides, it may need to much to bring back to the street. But, I've reached out to him and we'll see... I'm just posting some of the possibilities :)

I agree, but most if not all your $$$ gone once you put the heads on it.
Maybe it don't need my heads to go 10's ??? Lots of mild cast head 440's in A-bodies going 10's, with less gear too. Or maybe I bolt my heads on and my budget is gone and i'm gone with my budget - gone 10's !!! LOL

I think the 5k should be soft like 10.99. If you can get close to tens for as close to 5k as possible.
If I use 5250, I'll call it a win. Again, I may flop this whole project and post a 12.10 because the money is dictating what I do instead of what I'd like to do. That's the fun of it though…. :)

You start pricing valves and hardware plus labor it costs more to run iron heads.
I'm to stubborn to change now when I'm slowing my junk down anyway.
