So much for the " it came out of a running, driving car. Drop it in and go."

Bought a slanty that l was told came out of a " running, driving car."
" it has been rebuilt but with unknown mileage sense rebuilding."
Cool ! Got me a cheap motor to drop in the wagon ! Whoopeee !
The man l got it from, got it from someone else.

Not so fast there cowboy- as l would later find out.
First let me say this. I DO NOT consider myself a motor man. I only know enough to get myself in trouble. With that being said....

Up on looking in the intake and exhaust ports l could see what l consider a pretty fair amount of oil / carbon build up on the valve stems and top of the piston. I figured either valve seals or improperly seated rings or both.
Once the head was off, l noticed quite a ridge at the top of the cylinder. I decided to take it all the way on down. I used a ridge reamer to take the ridge off so l wouldn't (hopefully) break any rings taking the piston out.

Well, long story short.
Here are the piston and rods and what are left of the rings. As you can see every top ring was broken except for number 3.
Number 4 piston is burnt.
Just some light scoring on the cylinder wall where the open end of the rings were riding.

Gonna take more than I wanted to get it together but l am glad I didn't just throw it in the hole hoping it was ok.

That's unfortunate. If you don't know the people, then it's a "roll of the dice". Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't.

Considering people give running slants away for free....hopefully you didn't pay much for it.

A post in the Wanted section on here would probably yield you one for next to nothing.

Yes it is.
Only paid $200 for it tho so not a big hit there.
Had to rent a pickup and drive 3 hours each way.

Best part was he said he had another old intake to go with it that he threw in.
My butt hole 'bout puckered when he dug it out from a pile of other stuff and it was a aluminum super six intake !
I tried to hide my excitement and mumbled something along the lines of " yeah, l guess l'll take it too.

Have to take the positives where you get them.

Welll, everybody's idea of "rebuilt" can be a little different. They might have thrown new bearings and rings in it and maybe run a hone through it and called it good; but not taking that ridge out of it is probably what beat those top rings to death. Who knows if they bothered to put valve seals in it. Those two things would explain your carbon issues. Luckily you can save it. Take your time and do a good job of it. Good luck!

Score!! Almost makes it worth the hassle.

I bought the " Dutra bible" last year when it came out.
I guess now is a good time to study it word for word instead of skimming through it like I did the first time.

The 318 LA i got when i did a big block swap in a big old dodge i figured would need some tlc. no ridge, mains and rod bearings were hardly worn. It had actually been rebuilt, but it had a poly crank in it. Took some work to straighten away.

Yes but truth be told it WAS probably still running. Not running good but man its hard to completely KO a slant.

I agree.

Oh well. I still have at least 4 more weeks off work because of the virus. Should be able to do some parts cleaning and such. I'll take the block to the machine shop and see what he has to say.
Car itself needs work as well, so l can keep busy.

Started to show a strong interest in a small block a month or so back. Guy was nice enough but when I asked about Oil pressure and he didn't know that was enough to scare me off. Rarely, and I do mean rarely will a man with a hotrod not have an idea about oil pressure... I smelled a rat lol.....

You did get the Intake OP. That's something atleast...

Oh yes! I see! Rebuilt 20 years ago and has low miles (for a slanty....) and it was good when we pulled it for a V8. (Even though we pulled 9 years ago...)
It has seen regular Maintenance. (Twice a year oil change, needed or not...) Driven by this dude’s wife (Ex drag racer called “Lead Foot Ma’ma” 5 time local street drag champ, even has a Walley or 2....) and her daughter for a few years (the daughter who also drag raced the car and try auto crossing it as well...) and rarely driven by the guys son (because he grenaded the rear followed by the trans 50 miles later after the new rear went in..) but it was always good to us going out to picnics and donuts (kids taking it keg parties and empty parking lots for all night era drinks king and doing, well, parking lot donuts!) I’m most SURE this will serve you well (after you spend 8K) in your car.

Don't feel bad, did the same thing.
I bought a "running" slant from a friend of a friend.
I got it home and started to clean it up. Before to long it was "I should reseal that, and replace this"
Long story short, I ended up completely rebuilding the engine.
The hell of it is, I wasn't going to pull the crank, but that rear main seal was being stubborn, and I messed it up so I had to replace it.
Glad I did, the rings were like glass. They shattered when I pulled the pistons.
If I hadn't, that thing would smoked like a train, if it would have even started.
