Bronze gear necessary??

-
There are two issues here
One is wearing a bronze or other gear due to incompatibility with the cam
The other is wearing the cam due to changing from bronze to other gear
or if you get lucky
BOTH

trouble following your post... but.... are you saying I shouldn't use the crane gear after it's been run about 3k miles on the bronze gear? Comp cam tech told me no issue, their cam wouldn't have a wear pattern with the bronze, but rather the bronze would be worn from their cam.

So, for years and years I've been misled. Flat tappet cams were the crime - subject to cam break-in failure and then keeping zinc in the oil thereafter. I've never lost a flat tappet cam by the way. But now my roller cam/bronze gear in my van is putting bronze flakes in my oil as it shears away each time I drive it. Now, there is a 90 dollar solution in the Crane melonized gear (without shaft). But, it should be placed in new when the cam is new. I have another roller cam heading my way, an Oregon grind. Is it billet? Is it a stock regrind? Do I use the Crane "90 dollar wonder", or can I use the factory gear drive? Flat tappets have been issue free for over 3 decades to me. Now I'm going roller and my troubles begin.... starting with a gear shearing unwanted substance in my oil. As Tony The Tiger would say.... GRRRRRRREAT!!!!!!!!!!!! :BangHead:
If its billet , buy a gear from hughs /end of problem-----------

This topic is interesting to me...as I'm lining up what I want to use in my engine. I have a Bullet steel solid roller cam...I called them last week and they said to use a bronze gear. I have a new one, so it's not hard to do.

I asked about the non-bronze gears (such as the newer OEM roller cams use) and they said 'use bronze' but I gotta be honest...I didn't specifically ask about melonized gears and I don't think they had much experience.

I've used bronze in the past...I never had any issues but there's no doubt they wear way faster than stock.

So to reiterate....some of you guys are running the Crane melonized gear (PN 69970-1) on a steel roller cam and it holds together?

My race motor had a cast iron FT cam with a bronze gear...which I will reuse with the new FT cam.

I remember when I had my 1st beer too..

Reader at home, just use a regular pinned gear on a hardened shaft with a cast iron cam.

Yes, I do. No problems.
Billet core + crane coated steel/melonized gear I put on a mp hardened shaft.
I personally stay away from bronze in street motors..and since the crane gear came out have passed on them .

To each his own, but let's keep it grounded.

Thanks, I ordered one. I don't see any shafts for sale 'bare'....looks like I have to buy one with a gear and change it out (?)

I like the Milodon shafts...they stay full diameter all the way to the hex. A lot of others I see lose some diameter.

Yes, you have to buy the mp drive and change out the gear.
Taper or no taper, it won't be an issue.

Thanks...I was hoping they sold just the shaft for less money. I need an untapered shaft but I found one at a reasonable price. One does wonder why Mopar used 31/64" diameter rather than 1/2"....I guess that allowed them to buy 1/2" stock and grind it to size.

The cam ended up being a cast cam.... LOL seam right on down the middle. So no, the bronze gear wasn't necessary. Before I pulled it, I had called Comp Cams and they said it was billet. Sigh*

Yeah. Comp's customer service has been crap for quite awhile now. Last couple calls were not a good experience.
yeah, they told me it's billet and all they could recommend if I didn't want bronze was to call crane and get their gear. LOL. And the cam was cast... :D

Okay, I must be dense today. I go to the Crane website and I see gears for Ford, Chevrolet, and Holden (Holden?) but no Mopar. And, the gears that they are showing are either bronze or coated steel, nothing identified as "composite". What am I missing?

I bought one, but I'm not where I can get to it to get you a part number.

I'd appreciate that. I've been contemplating running a street hydraulic roller in an RB but this gear concern has prevented me from proceeding.
I'll post the number tomorrow

The coated steel gears work with a billet cam. I posted the small block # in post #7. The BB # is 66970-1
