One of my friends saw me tearing down the locked 318 from my 74 duster last week and it was trashed, probably been locked up since before I was born.

So my friend decided to give me a locked 318, this one is a from a really early build 68 B body (charger) so the block is dated 8/67.

This one is not as bad as the 74 was in the cylinders, but this one has rust under the intake manifold.

I drained at least a gallon of water.

My friend thinks it got watered last summer (2019) when we had a monsoon season, because he last ran this engine in late 17.

I was thinking for 68, it would have the raised area for the vin number stamp but it doesn't have any numbers anywhere that I can see.

'68 318

Wow I see it has the 9.2:1 compression pistons in it. Sure it has the full floating rods too.

Ouch! 318's are plentiful and plenty cheap, I'd say no need to dive into that one. However, if it has the 4 ears per side for motor mounts, it's said they have thicker walls and can be bored out to a ........ 340 ! Nope, I haven't tried so I cannot speak from experience.

If you have something big enough to soak it in, soak it in vinegar. It's cheap enough to fill a container big enough to hold the block and it works great.

It's kind of fun thinking back to 1967 when the guys were pushing those engine blocks down the assembly line just to make a paycheck for the week.

They were getting through the day and week, not knowing that 53 years later in 2020 people would be "oogling" over their well used, rusted up engine blocks. And conversations going back and forth over this thing they call the internet, talking about the ways to put them back into service again.

Pretty Cool, if the guys of 1967 only knew.

................Idonooo............. Around here there are lots of '18 blocks if you look, or are you wanting a "year date correct?"

Scrap!

If it were a numbers 340-6, 440-6, or Hemi yes. A dated 318, no.

Wow, off to the crusher with that one. I'd have a hard time trying to save a Hemi block in that condition. If you need a 318 I have a few that I don't want. Your welcome to have them.

Ouch! Maybe see if it has a forged crank to save out of it, but I'm askeert that's the textbook image for the term "Shitshow"...

If you had a original Hemi car and the original engine that looked like that damn straight you would try to save it.

Gosh, I guess a lot of yall can pick and choose. I've never had that luxury. I've cleaned up worse blocks than that before. You know, some people get great satisfaction bringing back something from the dead......even if it is something there's a pile of. It'a a lot of fun and very rewarding. Yall remember what that 400 crankshaft looked like I soaked in vinegar? A stock stroke 400 cast crank most people would have thrown away.

Would probably have to bush the lifter bores. Getting the cam out would probably be a lot of fun then would probably have line bore the cam journals. Sleeve the cylinders maybe. Not to mention the lower end. Hemi block maybe.

And a running 318 core will fetch from free to $100. I see where you are going here. LOL

Hey it's only $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

I would drop it in a 55 gal drum full of water and washing soda with a battery charger connected to it and a catalyst, leave it for a couple of days maybe a week and see what happens. Total cost of about $5.00

I'd do molasses, 1:9 parts water. buy it at a feed store. Submerge it for 2 weeks and see what you get.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmk. I'd have someone that thinks this is worth any kind of effort what so ever come and get it so I won't have to spend the time to haul it to the crusher and then get another GOOD motor. :p
I can't began to count how many RUNNING 318's I've crushed.

I have a 73 400 that has been sitting in a car without a hood and intake manifold for years that is probably in the same shape that is going to the crusher. Unless one of you want to try and save it. Your welcome to have it after I pull it. I just want the spool mounts and might try and save the oil pan if it isn't toooooo pitted up.
