small block stroker longevity

-
Johnny, when the switch was made to forged pistons and rods was it due to a warranty issue or some other problem, or just due to the increased power from the bigger hydraulic roller cam vs the old flat tappet?

Do you have any feedback from customers with a lot of miles on a stroker?
The piston change was way back. The hypers did show some fatigue over time. The forged just eliminate the potential problem. Anytime we can eliminate a potential problem we do. Even our 375 hp engine has the forges pistons now. And yes, we have tons of high mileage engines out there. We have produced nearly 400000 engines since the 90's. We are rated 5 stars on Google....so that should speak volumes.

I'm a little confused what Mopar motor didn't have forged rods from the factory

I don't think many know that fact. I guess I did say "rods and pistons" in the same sentence. Point being, years ago we used to use hyper pistons, and years back we went to icons and never looked back.

Yeah, diesel is ruled out. I don't want to sit next to it an listen to it rattle for hours at a time.

I dont think the noise will be an issue . Those Cummins are pretty quiet under load . But the heat and fit would be a hassle . Not to mention you will need to change everything in the driveline .
Trany , driveshaft , ujoints , gears ....
and cooling.
A torque tuned 408 with the correct cam would seldom see 5k and everything would fit nicely. All you would need is the 518 and a shorter driveshaft . Remember you will just be cruising along around 2800 rpm 99% of the time.

And you could sell me that adapter since I already have a 440 in my 78 FireBall .

I will wind up using it in another build if not the RV. Already got a PM about it as well from someone else. Just looked those things are pretty pricey now on PATC at $729. Maybe its time to get mine to a machine shop and have some made up.

The 408 stroker seems to be a killer combination, punches above it's weight. Like the 383 Chebby. Stroke, rod length, port sizing, induction length, etc all come together to make it work well.

Mine went 55,000 street miles and 700+ passes before I pulled it apart for piston change and refresh. Bores still straight and round. A well built one will go forever.

This will sound like stupid question but I am curious... what king of mpg are you guys getting on the street ? Is it better than you thought or the typical 8 mpg. This is directed more at the high mileage guys ...

my 360/426 stroker gets around 10mpg highway just about what my 440 got eats lots of gas . that's why i'm thinking about going back to a 340

10 Hwy ! What gears ?
Of course my 03 Ram only gets 11.5 city / 15 Hwy maybe ...

Whats this mileage you speak off?

If you don't mind my asking what is your particular combo? Cam, rear gear, tire diameter, trans, converter, and car or truck? Do you do any highway cruising if so what mileage on the hwy?

Thank you this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. That combo of mileage and passes definitely shows the wear and tear one of these combos will take. What piston/ring/rod/crank/cam combo were you running in it to get those miles? How many mpg did you get on the highway? What trans, gear, tire etc?

I got 4 vehicles that are street legal...I have no idea what mileage any of em gets

Sure you do . You know how many gallons your tank holds and approx how many miles you generally get per tank . I have BMW dual sport with no fuel gauge but I know the low fuel light will come on around 170 miles and it will take 3 Gals to fill it up .
So how many miles can you drive before you generally fill up and how many gals does it take ? Even if you dont track it on paper you probably have a general idea .

that’s a poor way to report mileage.

You need the recorded mileage before and after two complete tank fill ups. If you don’t fill the tank until the pump auto stops two consecutive times, its not worth recording.

Nope, I really don't

The family hauler has a counter on it. It claims to get 360 miles to the tank, but when it drops under 1/4, i fill it

The charger is the wife's, who knows when she fills that one
The plow truck i dont like to let go below half, but even half a tank is close to 20 gallons, but I couldn't tell you how many miles that is, since its a lot of back and forth
And the duster, shoot, I dont even know if the gas gauge works properly on that one

Truth of the matter is, I simply don't care anymore

I have reached a point in my life where gas mileage is no longer the determining factor on what car I drive (and when it was, I drove a passat, and the wife an aveo) but nowadays, if the level drops below 1/4, i whip out the ole credit card and fill her up
And if its the 5th day of the month, I pay off said credit card

Its kinda like milk
I dont care who finished the milk, I dont care if they drank it, used it for thier cereal or baked me a cake with it, but when it runs out, I just go grab another gallon

That is my point . Even if you dont do the calculations and keep records we all have some idea of how far our car will go between fill ups . That is if you put many miles on it.

The motor was a blueprint engines dressed 408 crate. It actually is 410 CI at .040 over. I run the car in stock appearing, stock tire class.
Mpg I have no idea, never cared.
727 with a PTC 9.5” converter with 3:73 now 4:10 gears. I run an r-70 14 redline bias ply repo tire. It was aluminum headed hydr flat tappet with a mighty demon and a air gap. Now ported X heads stock intake and 800 avs. Changed from icon dished piston to the icon flat top to bump comp to 12.2 to 1. A standard moly ring package. 4” cast scat crank, scat h beam rods shift at 6400 rpm. Now running solid flat tappet the full specs are in the 11 second car post
