Legally Register Any Car

-
NCIB lookup was nice.

10 cent stamp?

I recently bought a old vehicle which was last registered in another state.
Admittedly I paid too much but two things made me pull the trigger. One was it was a two plus hour flatbed tow to my house and the other was it had a valid title

The big question they did not answer-

If you did not previously download and fill out a VT bill of sale, how do you complete that?

Track down they person you bought it from after the fact?

@mopowers Take away is this:
1. VT allows anyone (even non residents) to register a car in the state of VT
2. VT does not issue titles for vehicles more than 15 years old, therefore it does not require you to provide a title for anything more than 15 years old from the previous owner. In fact they will not look at or accept it.
3. So, what they are stating is that you can use this method to register a non titled car in VT, and then once you have that registration you transfer it to the state you live in just providing a VT registration (as VT does not title over 15 years old).
4. They are then stating that because you have a car that was legally registered in VT (which does not title), your state DMV will then issue a title. I would imagine this depends on your state DMV rules.

@tedsweet I don't think anything in this process is illegal, but might not work in your state.

@YY1 I was also pleasantly surprised by the NCIB and tried it out with some of my cars. It seemed to take the old non standard (today) vin of early As

You do bring up a good point that you have to bring the bill of sale/ odometer form with you and have the seller fill it out. If you do this yourself that would be forgery and maybe that is what @tedsweet meant by illegal. Then once you have that filled out a law enforcement official has to validate the vin (call it in to ensure it's not stolen) and sign off.

i know of car done that way in vt came back as stolen when tried to title in ny

Most people have no clue of how to go through DMV. I had a guy come to buy a truck from me, he told me how many cars he had bought and sold but when it came down to him buying the truck he expected me to take the title to the DMV and get it in his name and he would pay at that time. He finally admitted that his wife did all the licenses on his vehicles. It’s not rocket science and time after time we hear the same old stuff of all the”black magic” that must be done to secure a legal title.

Then once you have that filled out a law enforcement official has to validate the vin (call it in to ensure it's not stolen) and sign off.

Actually it states quite clearly multiple times in the video that cars DO NOT require LEO verification of the VIN.

This is different than most of the "get a title for any car" services I've researched in the past.

Ya I don't Colorado will issue a title from a out of state bill of sale only.
I livd in Mo. 37 years, yes they do also.\
Tx. with an out of state title signed over to me I still have to haul it to the state trooper that does this thing and have him check it all out!
Tx we an title anything with the bonded title route.
Every state has a different wrinkle!

I can tell you how it IS in Georgia and they make NO exceptions. First, anything 1963 and older they WILL NOT issue a title on, even if you have one from a previous owner and it's signed over to you. 1963 and older cars in this state are bill of sale ONLY. Secondly, if a car is ever registered and tagged in Georgia without a title, you can NEVER get a title on it again. EVER. It is now a bill of sale only car. So he obviously doesn't know Georgia law.

...but another state may issue a title for that state from a GA bill of sale, or registration.

Colorado won't. At least they did not use to years ago. They have changed the laws here so I should check again.

Broadway Title use to get your car titled I think in GA. and then you could transfer it to your state.

Yes for sure, and like said every state is different which makes life confusing!
I have also noticed many states will do like Tx. and do a bonded title, it is somewhat a pain and the cost varies by how much bond the state decide you must buy! Lots of peeps just will not buy a car without the title as the bonded thing is more than wish to deal with or have brain enough to do, whichever! I used to buy some god projects with no title chap but not any more.
I did bonded titles this spring on two cars I have had a couple years, as I did not want to screw with it. Made it easy to not want to sell them!! I have about $500 total expense in the two.

Maybe some good info from Whitepunkonnitro? Sounds promising...of course Cali will F it up. Next time im In AAA Ill ask if a VT title is transferrable.

The key question for AAA or CA DMV is will they title a car from VT with only proof of registration in VT as that is all this process gives you.

...and the plates.

I suppose you could drive it with the VT plates and keep renewing the registration there, if your state won't recognize the official VT documents.
