What do you think about this 318 guys.

I sold my LA 318 to a guy who needed it for a 49 Plymouth I held onto it for years figured at this point it won't get used. I helped him install it and get it fired up. $300 is what I wanted for it. That was one of my "side work" help out jobs this year. The guy is the wifes uncle so hes family . Nothing special just overhauled with a Summit K 6901 cam and he ran a BBD 2 barrel with the smogger 70s boat anchor intake basically stock everything including exhaust manifolds.:) I have nothing against them I just don't really run them I have in the past also had a slant in a Duster at one point...

I wouldn't call it a strawman thing.. i have 5k+ into my 318 and it's still a pile of parts.. when i stroke it it will be 10k+... and i'm not doing anything crazy parts wise... just something to do.

P.S. i also don't see it as having to much money to throw away, i stress about every penny.. guys that build show queens with date coded torque converter bolts are the money guys
But that's not the norm and if you built the same 340/360 stroker would it been much cheaper?

no.. same exact price (318 or 360 stroker)... cept i can do bout 35 more inches.. so a bit more torque.. i plan to do a stroker if i find a 360roller block or this 318>390 if i don't.. just getting my car mobile at the moment.

P.S. i mean same price if you stroke a 318 or 360.... right now i'm just using a beat up old bottom end and not even checking bearings to get running but putting all my good parts on it since i have them if that makes sense..

Al who I pictured above, just built a 426/360 stroker for his Challenger. He hasn't got it dialed in yet but it has dipped into the 9's so far.

I still can’t understand why guys on a lite budget overlook a stock stroke 360. With the availability of 280-300 cfm head’s available you could put a few more bucks towards those and run an external balance to save even a few more dollars. Easy 10’s.

Everybody thinks you have to have more cubes to go fast.

Nothing wrong with 318's, I have had a few that perform very well but, I prefer a 4inch bore for making power.

I'm calculating 10k for a 360 mag to an all forged 408, plus $2k more for
Issues the will appear during the build

well.. DVW has a buddy that ran mid 9's on a stock 360 crank for like 8 years and never had issues with turbos making like 800hp... soo.. the stuff is tough, i just figure if i'm gonna build it i might as well go for inches also. My main thing is i want something i can beat the piss out of and not worry bout it coming apart.

I agree its always about the heads. Most 318 guys nix the heads right off the bat that never gets said though i suppose its assumed? I dunno. Have I mentioned I had a guy on YT recently tell me to "run 318 heads " on my 340? I was like "really?" LOL! There's all kinds floating around in space on the internet LOL!

Yeah, i have had people tell me not to do 426 but no one with a good reason why not.. Everyone thinks 408 over 390 is a MASSIVE jump in power, but 408 to 426 doesn't matter... although it's pretty much the same price to do.

18 cid 390 vs 408, probably about 20-22 lbs-ft but you could make more than some 408's.

Torque of different displacement doesn't matter much if geared in proportion. lbs-ft per cid is more important.

For a given hp at the tire at speed will have a fixed torque, so say eg.. 114 mph in 1/4 mile takes 300 hp at the 28" tire tq will be 1312 to the tire, so as long these car is putting down the same 300 hp to the wheel no matter /6 or 440 both are putting same torque to the ground.
Same goes for 20 30 80 97 etc.. mph.

a 318 is i believe 3.91 stock.. i can't see .090 making that much of a difference... unless 4inch is magical?

Yep, a set of 302's will wake that 340 right up!

i got a set i will sell you.... they are performance though so.. not cheap

I still have my 360 that my son ran 6.54 with four years ago. That engine was trashed when a tie bar broke on a Comp roller lifter. That block was originally together with a Racer Brown solid lifter cam and Matt wanted a .620 lift roller in it that I had here. I will be tubing that block when I put it together again. I already found a used roller cam and had another stock crank balanced for that assembly. Ported Edelbrock or Speedmaster heads, ported Victor340 intake, 3200 pound car, low 10 second combo.

That's why i wanted to go with the OEM rollers so bad... i had a set of aftermarkets lose roller bearings and eat a engine once.. i trust the factory **** since it has to last and i'm not using a huge cam..

I also considered keeping the 318 and a torquestorm.. but looks like i can't keep power steering with that setup :(

Not a friend. That’s his son.

less after boring, block strength is probably a bigger limit on power than 318 bore size.

the whole 318 thing is the block and shared crank dimensions with the 340. everything else has to be changed or upgraded. this is why people say "why not start with 340 or 360" everything else is there in a 340 for sure. You see these drag race 318s but is the parts combo ever posted? no racers don't share the recipe. I'd venture to say the block with the 318 in the side is the only thing 318. Which brings us back around to the point of how much $$$ is dumped into a 318 vs starting with something else as a base platform? it really comes down to "proving" it can be done and we all know it can, but dollar for dollar is it cost effective and worth it? Traditionally? no but these days where engine cores are drying up maybe...? :)

But really how many 318 guys are wanting to build faster than a 14-13s cars 12s at best? But I agree 360 is a better engine to build from and most would be happier with the out come but then again I think most would be even happier with a 383-543.

oh sorry... i am bad about reading back... and yeah.. saying it's a 318 doesn't make sense.. other than saying 318 block...

On the upside.. this makes me feel better bout doing a 390 if i don't run into a cheap 360 block... i only want 450ish hp anyway.. just dependable.
What would you consider to be a cheap 360 block?
There is a 90 W250 pickup truck in a yard local to us with a 360. That should be a factory hydraulic roller camshaft LA block.

cheap to me would be 100-300ish.. and yeah 90 would be a LA roller. That's at the old warhoops? not sure on their name now..
