I acquired this Cuda from my Dad's cousin who had owned it for 53 years. My dad purchased it new in 1969 and drove it for 2 years and then sold it to his cousin who owned it ever since. Cousin Bill did his best to keep the Cuda in good condition over the years. I don't know the full history of the car during this time but obviously when he acquired it from my Dad in 1971 it was just a car that he used as transportation, not yet a classic. In the discussions that I have had with cousin Bill, I understand that he had a few people in his local area that would work on the car for him. So I believe he didn't do much of the work himself, especially in recent years.
The car presents well from 10 feet away but when you get up close and start examining closer, there are multiple issues in almost every area. So what I am faced with is not exactly what you would call a restoration but instead I will be sprucing up, tidying up and restoring or replacing worn or shabby looking parts. I plan on doing as much of the work myself as I possibly can. I have some experience tinkering on classics because I have been the proud owner of a 1960 Pontiac Bonneville convertible for the last 11 years. My work on the Pontiac was much the same as it should be with the Cuda as it was in fair condition when I acquired it but just needed attention to small issues all over the car.
I thought I would make this thread as a way of sharing my work and progress as I deal with various issues and maybe we can learn from each other.

Here are some pictures from day one when I acquired the Cuda.

Engine bay.
Aftermarket intake and carb. Sloppy wiring and a weird patched hole on the firewall behind the distributor.

It looks to me like the firewall was cut to fit the HEI distributor.......(probably just get a different distributor)
looks like its got a hydraulic throw out bearing, power steering cooler?
I'm a fan of the intake and carb but the dual feed line could go, lot better options there.
Sweet car, best of luck

Thanks for the wiring info. I have read a lot of people mentioning that option but I never saw exactly how it was done. I obviously have a lot of re-wiring to do. I am a bit of a perfectionist and I can't stand to see the rats nest of cables with zip ties all over the place.

Wires hanging from the dash became standard equipment in 1967. I'm curious how well the HEI worked with this OEM charging system.

Awesome car. Watch those wires for hood turn signals. Back around 1980 or so my wires got pinched between hood and cowl shorted and caused the turn signal switch to start burning. I pulled into gas station and mechanics ran out and disconnected battery to save the car.

love it and great to come back around
are those the oe valve covers i'm looking for for my 69 340 ?
can't get over how clean it is ...like it had a repaint under the hood

Hope you get it running and see you out at one of these cruises:

why does it have an allen holding the exhaust mani on that should be a stud sealed to the coolant passage

Nice that you have your dads car back and it appears to be a well optioned car. Post a picture of the fender tag. Have you located the build sheet?

Curious if that distributor has adjustable mechanical advance or if the plates would have to be welded to limit the total timing. Hard to say what it will want for a curve. :usflag:
lets revisit timing

It is 22 degree fixed mechanical advance with adjustable vacuum advance

I have the original windows sticker and the build sheet which I was told was found under the back seat.
