Do you have a picture of one? I didn't know there was one, maybe in 66 but not in 67

Alan

There was some type of decal on the air cleaner in 67 for CAP
This was the only decal on my 67 with CAP.

That's different than the ones on a '66 model. I'll post one a bit later today.

I bought a C.A.P air cleaner a few years ago for my 66 and it had a worn out decal on it like the one in the attached photo.

Where'd that pic come from? Because that looks like a new decal somebody had (or has?) for sale. I was almost sure I'd seen this one from Osborn, but while they do have a bunch of CAP decals, they don't have one just like this. They'd probably be interested in adding it to their line, though; you might send them this pic and see what they say.

There was a retrofit kit for car brought into California, I wonder if that decal was part of that kit?

I've had this for awhile, just haven't put it on the air cleaner yet. Mine has a number written on the back DD 633 and mudsclassicparts.com out of California shows this still in stock for $18.76

Aha! That's an Osborn part number, and I found it listed kinda-wronglike in their PDF cattledog:

DD0633 1966 PLYMOUTH SPORT FURY CLEAN AIR AIR CLNR DECAL.

It's listed at $9 in the cattledog, and I just realized that link I posted earlier isn't to Jim Osborn, but to a vendor who carries some of Osborn's decals. There's no Osborn website, they use phones (770-962-7556), faxes (770-962-5881) and email (davidosborn1969@yahoo.com).

Worth requesting a cattledog from them; they have all kinds of cool stuff nobody else reproduces.

That was a different thing – a giant mess when California briefly tried to require retrofitment of NOx emission controls to '66-70 cars. I wrote about that in the second half of this article (if you want to skip the Buick, search the page for the word hosey and start reading from there).

The system this decal was part of was an OE system, which I wrote a lot about here.

Chrysler also offered a "UCCAP" (Used Car Clean Air Package) which was a whole lot better than the aftermarket garbage used in the retrofitment program.

I was always curious about that. Did both Hamtramck and Los Angeles plants build California cars and vice versa? Did someone in say Reno Nevada or Portland Oregon get a Ca emission car from LA, or, one shipped without C.A.P. all the way from Hamtramck? I don't have any absolute proof, but, I believe the LA plant started production of the '66 models later than Hamtramck did. I have a '66 Barracuda built in Hamtramck that was shipped to Hawaii! The only reason I can think of is that LA wasn't ready yet and they wanted all dealers to have the new models at the same time, so, with Hamtramck being ready earlier, just ship whatever they had to wherever it was needed. So, to make a long story even longer, anyone have a Hamtramck built '66 with C.A.P.? How about a non-Ca car with C.A.P.? There was a C.A.P. package available as an add-on, so, why, if ALL Ca cars came with them, and if it wasn't available to any other state? I suspect it may have been optional to other states, or, even individuals if they felt getting C.A.P. was helping reduce smog at the time. I welcome your thoughts and especially any proof one way or the other.

Apparently, there are two different stickers for a C.A.P. vehicle. The factory one like in my first photo, and one that comes in the add-on kit (which I just remembered I had!). They're not even the same size. The add-on one is bigger and worded different. I don't remember this kit being required on used cars back then (and I had a smog license in the late '70's). Was this totally optional to satisfy the tree-huggers?
