I'm getting ready to tear into my '65 Formula S 273 engine.

I have just about everything covered, but I'm not sure about the intake manifold fasteners. The bolts look correct, but I'm not sure about the washers that are on the intake now. The washers look like the exhaust washers. Is this correct? Should those washers be there? (Yes, I know they are 5/16-18)

Also, I've found what looks to be correct replacement bolts, but I notice there are 10 that are 1 5/8" long and 2 that are 1 13/16" long. What holes use the longer bolts?

I don't remember there being any washers under intake bolts, but, unless it's a 100 point resto, I'd probably use them. The longer ones would be for anything the bolt holds, such as the return spring bracket, ground strap eye, etc.

That makes sense with the longer bolts... Thinking about it, they probably are used with the kickdown bracket.

I'm not looking to do the "100 point resto". LOL The car is just a nice driver. I'm just slightly anal about the fasteners looking right.

The kickdown bracket (bellcrank) should bolt to the back of the driver's side cylinder head, not the intake.

Yea, I thought about that after I typed it.... So, it was the first thing I checked when I went out to work on the car and you are correct.

'66 didn't use any washers, and IIRC the '65's I used to own didn't either. 2bbl and 4bbl used the same bolts.
FWIW, the '68 273 I just took apart had captive washers on the 3/8" intake bolts. I don't believe that engine had ever been apart.

I'm really thinking that the washers were added on my '65 by someone when the intake was off.

Those are exhaust manifold washers. A thin flat washer makes sense so that it torques evenly and accurately. The only reason to use fancy washers is the use of tapered washers to adjust from 64/65 273 heads/manifolds to 66 and up heads/manifolds. This is done to use early manifolds on late heads on visa versa. The later bolts are also larger (size not length).

The longer bolts hoes on the front of the engine to hold the groind cable and thevreturn spring bracket. No washers.
Thanks.

As I got everything off the intake, I see that regular flat washers were on a few bolts. I may use a flat washer when I reassemble the engine. I usually do that anyway.

Then when I was unbolting the manifold, it became real apparent the longer bolts went in the front manifold holes. The boss is quite a bit thicker there.

On the exhaust manifolds there should one be eashers on the outer pin bolts.
Those are missing on mine. They must have ended up on the intake... LOL!
