Hello everyone, I'm new here. I've been looking at this forum a lot lately and I'm glad to see it's still quite active.

So, my late dad, his first car was a 1974 Duster 360 (picture attached). Anyways, my wife has directed me to a 1974 Duster for sale in my area. It's a roller without an engine or trans and he wants $800 firm. I have no idea what engine it used to have. It looks in decent enough shape.

Now, I'm handy enough with a wrench, getting this thing up and running isn't the problem. I have a total budget of $4000. What I'm wondering is, would that be enough to just go for a big block install or should I just shove a magnum 360 and a 518/46RE in it?

Perusing this site I have learned that the B block would be easier to fit than an RB block. Unfortunately the closest 400 is 6 hours away. There's a 383 20 minutes out. It's a 69 low compression engine but comes with a set of HP flat tops, 906 heads, and a extra steel crank. It's just a long block with heads, nothing else, and he's asking for $600. (if stuffing a 440 in is no big deal I can find them everywhere, there's complete pan to carb with trans for $750) There's a big block 727 within my driving limits that has a torque converter (claims it ran fine) for $350. I'm not sure if they would fit but there's a set of 66-69 B Body big block log manifolds in my area for $40.

On the other side, I can get a clapped out ram for $1200, scrap what I don't need, and get a 2wd 46RE with 113k miles for $200. The crossmember adapter to run the OD trans would be $415 from US Car Tool.

the likelihood of bringing in a big block duster under 4K is extremely low.

magnum with an automatic-- be that 42/46 or 904/727 is much more realistic. that's the direction i'd be headed in.

it's also an easier lift, especially for somebody just getting into mopars.

that is a tight budget
is the car clean,no rust and complete
big block is way out of your budget
small block will be the cheapest ....is it a v8 car

Haven't checked the car out in person yet. Rust looks minimal in the pictures but when I go see it I'll take a magnet. Not sure if it's a v8 or /6 car.

If its a 6 car your adding $$$ to do the build
And how complete is it
Is the power steering pump and brackets there
Floors are were I would look first for rust
A little in the quarters not a deal breaker
Shift linkage
Drives shaft
Exhaust
All that stuff adds up
If they just took the engine and trans out and all the parts are there its a doable on a small budget

Yeah, I was looking up prices of driveshafts and other parts needed and I can see that the big block likely won't happen. That's okay, my main project is getting the 454 in my shed eventually. Dusters in my area, even rollers, rarely seem to be less than $2000-2500. He claims he has most parts, I'm going to reach out and go look at it this week. 74 Duster roller - no motor, no trans.

360 Magnum the way to go to keep price low and have a better overall combo. It fits better, it lighter, and you can make basically the same power for less.

I buy junk rams in PA for Six to Eight hundred bucks.
Use the magnum 5.9 if the trans works sell it to some dude that needs it for his ram.
Use anything you can including chunks of sheetmetal. Scrap the rest. Buy a used 904,chinese intake, used carb. Get it running stock, quickly and under budget. worry about go fast stuff later because project creep is a nightmare.
4000 goes quickly 5 or 10 bucks at a time.

I did a super penny pinching 440 swap on my 74 swinger. You will be forced to blow a big chunk of the budget on headers.

I like the single donor approach with the Ram. If it were my project I would transplant the EFI over too, but not everyone would want to deal with the wiring required.

The magnum swap would be the most cost effective, by far.

But $4k is going to be very light. Even if you get the engine in running condition, most "rollers" are going to need full suspension rebuilds to be roadworthy. And even with the cheapest parts and doing the labor yourself you'd have half your budget or more just into that.

Also, the later overdrive transmissions are not a straight bolt in. They need crossmember and tunnel work to fit, more/less depending on the exact model of transmission used.

I hate discouraging people from getting cars back on the road, but putting a Duster roller back on the road with a total budget of $4k is a big hill to climb. Maybe not impossible with the proper horse trading and free labor, but realistically I think you're going to have more into it than that if you're successful.

Yeah i would do the efi too
Think the fuel.pump would be the most involved
If you had the donner the vss is the biggest thing

that is not a bad idea. Take the saved cash on a carb and intake, get pcm flashed .

Welcome to A-Bodies. We have the same hope for my sons first, daily

I have a carburetor available. Don't hate but it's a 750 quadrajet. Also there's some 904s available in the area if a 518 is too much work. If I was going small block, I'd likely keep it a cruiser and not worry about big power numbers. I'd much rather have an overdrive for that. Do the 5.2 magnums have the same head cracking issues the 5.9 does? How much tunnel work for the 518? I thought I read on here that it can be done just by cutting the torsion bar crossmember and installing the USCT. I'm not opposed to light metal work

I have a 97 1500 4x w the magnum. Original motor, I'm a freak when it comes to maintenance and have just under 400k on the magnum with zero issues

quadrajet is a great option. I would like to have overdrive in my 70 but these transmissions are the worst part of the ram. I cant convince myself to go through all the work for a trans that was not reliable when new.
