I signed up for classes and am getting my permit. I prefer the reliability of a revolver so I'm looking at the Ruger SP101 in .357 mag. My other choice is the new Ruger LCR in 38 spl.

What do you all suggest for something that absolutley cannot be seen including holster rigs?

If you go with the SP101 you might want to consider the hammerless model. A "J" frame SW is a little smaller and lighter. Consider how you are carring it that can dictate the style gun you need.

They did have an S&W airweight at the store I called today in 38 spl +P for a reasonable price. The new RUger LCR has a polymer frame and revised fire control mechanism. No hammer, DAO.

I'd prefer a under the shoulder (armpit holster) for the winter but don't know what I'm going to do for the summer without looking like I'm a miami vice reject. Ankle holsters seems far too difficult access in a stressful situation. I'm a jeans and t-shirt guy in the summer. Front slung fanny pack maybe? Seems pretty obvious, but that may be to my advantage anyway.... Photog vest?

I'd use an inside the belt pancake style but I prefer crossdraw as that's how I always carried my sidearm when hunting. It's a familarity thing.. I don't want to get confused in a life or death situation. Plus it affords some protection across my body. The only semi-auto I ever owned/used/shot was a Glock in 40 S&W. Great weapon and never failed to fire for me but bigger than the SP101.

Comon' guys, someones got to have a CCW here.

you'll shoot your eye out kid! Ok had to say it, hate that movie!

If your looking for a hammerless, I would recomend the S&W model 442 airweight as shown on the right. Only drawback is that its a 5 shot. Its light and comfortable. If you cant do the job in one shot, then I guess you should not get one..LOL So dont let that hold you back.

On the left is my primary carry weapon. Its a H&K P200sk subcompact .40 cal. Again, nice and light. Good carry choice for those that like semi-autos.

In the middle is my wife's .38 S&W model 36. Its heavy! but she likes it...:) :toothy10:

SSSSShHHHHHHHhhhhhhh!!!!

Pelosi may be listening.

*****! :thebirdm: lol! Two of my co-workers both have CCW's, one is the CEO's son, an ex Army Ranger and the other is our HR director, a woman. They both steered me to the same instructor.

LOL! No kid at 43 and have been shooting since I was 10. My Dad was a Marine and made beachheads at Okinawa, Bouganville and one more that escapes me at this moment. He survived all this to have ten children of which I am the last. He was the man that taught me proper firearms safety and marksmanship. He started me on a BB gun (no, I didn't shoot my eyes out, lol) then bought me a Ruger 10/22. Let's just say I've been reloading my own for the last 12 years. ;)

Yes, in a situation one shot should do it with a SP101 in .357 mag and it only holds five too. I can't imagine a "situation" where I would be shooting over a distance of 20 feet.

H&K makes some the best weapons I've ever fired, but I've never used one of their pistols. I did have a surplus 18.5" CETME in .308 which was the base for H&K 91. Bad *** rifle, no doubt. Not as accurate as M1A1 but devasting at 200 yards and under. Puts the AK47 to shame as far as power and accuracy. Unfortunately, the H&K is out of my price range, just like the SIG's.

Browning hipower; 15 bullets; small and thin, and accurate.

Beatifully made and reliable, just too big for my purpose. I'd still take the .357 over the 9mm. I like the 45ACP better for close range but again, there's the concealibilty factor. Great weapon, but come on man, how am I going to conceal a Browning HP on me in the summer? I'm 5'11 and 210. Not a little dude but not a giant by any stretch of the imagination.

Been carrying for about 35years now. The longer you carry the lighter the weapon. Started out with a Model 60 S&W, went to an AMT back up and carry a Kel Tec .380 now in the Summer. Have a Glock 36 in a pocket holster in my coat in the Winter. The weapon is a personal choice, what you feel comfortable with. Some folks like wheel guns and some semi auto's.

Mines a S&W MP40C for the winter, 40 cal/ 11 rounds, compact size but accurate with good stopping power. Just ordered a Ruger LCP for the summer---I hope they get all the bugs worked out before they ship mine. .380 cal/ 7 rounds and fits in your pocket without a holster.
Stock up on ammo before they up the tax on it and make you register it.

Thank you Zorro. I've never carried on a daily basis with the exception of my land I had in Southern Colorado. I had either my Colt Anaconda or my Ruger Vaquero at my side, but this was open carry land. The big Ruger was strong side and the Colt was cross draw. It didn't suprise me a bit when neighbors would show up on horseback to shoot the **** and see if I needed any help with a sidearm strapped on and a Marlin .45-70 in a saddle holster. They'd announce themselves... "HO, HO IT'S ........ Commin' on in".

Good people and good times around the camp fire. I was sweaty, dirty and ready for a beer by the time they rolled through..... Lots of stories from then, don't want to bore anyone. :-D

Back to the issue at hand, I guess i just need to carry for awhile and decide whats right for me.

I heard of the recall on the LCP. Ruger has always been good to the point shipping me new rear sight screws that the head had cracked off on my 10/22..... 20 years after my Dad bought it for me.

No doubt on the ammo.... I'm stocking up on reloading supplies.

The Browning is smaller than a .357, less stopping power, but more bullets. Shoot them 4 times.

I usea ruger p94dc 45

A friend quite some time ago said he couldn't hit the target at the range consistently at IIRC was 30'. I said "no kidding, mind if I give it a try?". This would have been my first try at a pistol semi-auto. I made a smiley face on the target with only 8 rounds. Then he complianed that it started to rust. Chi-Town is just humid as Kentucky for crying out loud. I said that he still had to oil it just like it was blued and human oil is corrosive. He never complained since.

Great weapon, again just too big for CCW in the summer for me.

but for long shoots romac pslIII 762x54r sweet and to the point!

Well yeah..... But no better than the .308 or 30-06. I had a ton "O" fun with my 28" octagon barreled Marlin "Cowboy" .45-70 handloads and stock mounted verner flip up rear sight. Yeah, it was like aiming artillery but when those 450 grain bullets hit the side of the mountain at a 1000 yards it would take bushes out. My buddies .25-06 was lucky to make a puff of dust. I'd kill a deer at that distance, that .25 might kill a rabbit.

life or death wheel gun hands down. my 1st firearm was a ruger. the first gun i shot was a ruger. price and reliability they are great guarantee the damned thing unless you go and do something stupid with it. ive seen thousands of rounds go through a sp101 2" w/spur. never a failure. semi auto's are more complex more things to break, fail to feed, fail to fire... there are pros and cons on both sides of the board. i always recommend the sp101 to anyone who wants personal protection. i like the option of switching between .38 special and .357 mag. not sure where you live but ammo has been steadily rising with rumors of a tax increase on ammo. just a friendly reminder if you have to defend yourself by shooting another person always use factory loaded ammo that way you cover your own *** against law suits. cant remember the exact details why but the local sheriff dept. basically told me that rock salt was a no no despite being nonlethal. i guess less liability...

if you come across a .22lr sp101 in california let me know & i'll snatch it right up(once they leave the state they cant come back)....

Thanks man, Ruger firearms for me has always filled the bill as far as revolvers are concerned. I have never had a Ruger revolver fail to fire for me ...... ever.

I would never handload in a self-protection weapon, point well taken and thank you for your learned input. :read2:

Not a revolver, but i carry a springfield armory XD9 loaded with hydroshocks or my Kimber TLE 2 . BTW the kimber is a fine 1911 A1 love those 45's.
I think since its my right to bare arms that i should, because IF YOU DON'T USE YOUR RIGHTS YOU LOSE YOUR RIGHTS!

AGREED! If you don't use your rights, they will be usurped (taken away). 8) Yes, a slim line Kimber would be at the top of my list if it was more familiar to me. I want to act instinctively in a life or death situation. Again, a Kimber is out of my financial means.

Get what my grandpa has.... A custom Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Mag (custom-length 7-3/4" blued barrel, polished frame, blued cylinder, Pachmayr grip). Imagine carrying that thing around, LOL! My dad wanted to get a handgun for home defense and has always had a thing for 9mm for some reason. I keep trying to get him to buy an M1911 .45 if he ever gets a handgun but I doubt he will. I do love the Browning Hi-Power though, my grandpa also has one of those (chambered 9mm) and it is my favorite over the Ruger and his High Standard .22 target pistol.

The problem is that it has to be concealed, I had a Redhawk in .44 mag. :-D I was able to put a 240 grain SWC American Eagle round into a windmill gearcase. It's car stopper in a handgun but the recoil put an accurate second shot in the 2 second range. As I mentioned earlier, open carry with a big revolver was no problem. Man, I miss that Colt Anaconda......

This is a different deal. CCW requires that it cannot be seen..

Yes, I do remember and it was Guam. It could have been Tarawa and thank God it was not or I would not be here.....

Edit: He made it for a reason, then he died of prostate cancer in '96....... He was not fullfilled when he died, he was mad as hell..... and took it out on me. Long story. He still left me the the Japanese Ararisaka 7.7mm rifle he captured. How do I know he captured it? I have pictures and the rifle, with the Imperial Sun on the bolt.

Also, I do remember him speaking of the Chinese and how well he was treated after the war. He just wanted to go home....... But he was appointed as the "Chinese Honor Guard" after all the crap he went through. Many people don't know that the Japanese were as bad as the Nazis in regards to torture....
