..... that have left an affectionate impression in your mind as the years have progressed.
Anne and Honey comes to mind and there are others that i will discuss later, but these two dogs were purchased after i saw the movie "Where The Red Fern Grows". Two redbone gips that had to be the best squirrel dogs to ever roam the hills of southern Missouri. What's yours?

I had a half German Shepard police dog half husky mix I spent all my spare time with up in Illinois when I was a young teen. One spring I broke thru the ice on Sauk lake and had him on a chain. the ice broke every time i tried to get up so I started screaming at toby to git. He got freaked out and tried to run away from me pulling me over the edge of the ice out of the water to safety saving my life. Toby,s life ended short when he was hit by a power truck one summer when we left him in the construction yard while we were camping. When we opened the gate he ran out all excited to see us and was immediately hit by a large power company winch truck. I was 13 then and am 51 now and i still think about my old buddy.

One I still have, Toby, a 14 year old Lab. The other is one that roamed into our yard when I was about 15 and adopted us. He was an old Doberman mix, but only lived about a year or so after he found us, but extremely loyal. And Ginger, a German Shepherd that my Grandparents had and we grew up together until she died when I was about 12. She was my best friend for a long time.

Oh man, you know I had to jump on this thread, lol.

Rocky was my first German Shepherd Dog and he was quite the character. I had a girlfriend over and we were drinking some rum and cokes. She started to get pretty buzzed, said something funny to me and slapped me on the leg. Rocky jumped on the coffee table and grabbed her by the wrist and just growled..... Needless to say, she wasn't my girlfriend for very long.

Another time we (the dog and I, that gf was long gone) went camping and while I was gathering wood, he gave me a bark and a wag and I gave him a big stick to drag back. He and I continued on like that till I had a good supply for the night. Needless to say, for his help he got a big piece of steak that evening.

Next morning in the tent he gave a bark and I let him out to do his thing. I crashed back out and about an hour later I heard him bark again. First thought was "Oh crap, he got into something". I looked outside the tent and there was a big pile of firewood. Even some big *** 40 lb logs, lol! Rocky got steak and eggs for breakfast. :)

Oh shoot Mike! Bernie's gone?? When did this happen? I'm so so sorry brother. :sad5:

last Tuesday Joe I did not even get on the computer all day after I went out that morning to walk him around the house and water and feed him, His mother died the same way in there sleep. It was a sad day. I still can't talk about him with out choking , Thank you Joe.

Well, I gotta get a tooth fixed tomorrow afternoon. They're way stingy on the painkillers so I'm going to need to get some booze on the way home. I think we should have a drink to Bernie. May he rest in peace in "The Land Of The Slow Squirells". I like to think that they'll be there waiting for us until we "Come Home".

Rocky is gone too. It was cancer and it sucked. It took me almost ten years to get another dog. I think he's in "The Land Of The Slow Girlfriends" waiting for me. :)

Yes one day I will see my old friends come running to me for some lovin and friend ship,

Hey Small Block, I saw that movie when I was younger(Where the red fern grows)I cried like a baby, same with Old Yeller. About a year ago while digging through ths discount dvd bin at wally mart I found a copy. My wife had never saw the movie. Needles to say we watched, we cried, and she told me to get ride of it and never do that again. Well anyway we just had to put down our 10 year old black lab mix named Cody due to cancer. That was the hardest thing I ever had to do. He was perfect in mind and spirit but the tumers really messed him up inside, he stopped eating for a week and then wouldn't drink any water. The vets were aces about the whole thing, we stayed with him till the very end. Sorry for the sad story but we believe the pain of loosing him is offset but the joy he brought us.

Dang dogs! They get in your heart worse than almost anything else - I guess that's because they're so loyal and always happy to see you.
I've had some good dogs and some great dogs over the years (1 Terrier, 2 Beagles, 3 Irish Setters). But I've got to say my favorite breed is the 3 Rhodesian Ridgebacks I've had.
I got the 1st one (Rocky) shortly after I divorced my ex. Wanted a good loyal short-haired, large dog for my then 7-year old daughter and 2-year old son. Rocky was truly my daughters dog as Ridgebacks pick out 1 person in the family to be extremely loyal to and will lay down their life for them if necessary. Had to put him down due to cancer at age 11 just after my daughter left for college.
Got my 2nd Ridgeback (Toby) as a 'rescue dog'. Drove all the way to the SF bay area for him. His original owners raised him and their older Ridgeback as housedogs but then turned both of them over to the rescue organization when they had a baby and booted both dogs out of the house (bastards!!). Toby chose my son to be 'his person', but became my dog when my son moved out on his own. I could not leave the house on a weekend without taking Toby with me in my truck. He'd come running whenever he heard my keys jingle and just sit by the front door waiting to go. Never locked the truck or even rolled the windows up with 95 lbs. of Ridgeback sitting in the front seat as a deterrent. Had to put him down a couple of years ago also due to cancer. I arranged for the vet to come to the house. Gave Toby a bowlful of chocolate ice cream (only time he ever tasted chocolate) and then hugged him while the vet did his thing. Cried like a baby afterward.
The very next weekend we went to a dog show looking for another Ridgeback and found our current one, Brady. He'd been brought out from Ohio as a puppy to be a showdog to enhance a local breeders bloodline but they had to have him 'fixed' when one of his testicles didn't drop. The breeder came over to interview my wife and I and see our house and other dog (Siberian Huskey) to make sure all was going to be OK, then ended up giving us Brady. He really is a great dog.

Man, 'aint that the truth!

It sucks so bad to just see them go limp after a shot of the purple stuff. It's the worst part of being a pet owner.

Cool! A guy just a block away helped me get Merlin back with the help of a RR. All he said was "go get 'em!" The RR just walked right up to Merlin and had him follow?! It was cool to watch. Neat dogs and I think it was the first time I ever met a RR.
