...........I really appreciate making a deal with our usa members .....but 1 thing i have 2 ask is please dont declare the used parts worth more than u sell them 2 me as i have 2 pay duty, taxes and a handling fee based on the inflated price.........thanks........kim.............

You are correct in this matter. If the parts were made in the USA, there should also be no duty on them.

Try to send them via USPS at all times, per discussion in another forum on this topic. It makes them a lot cheaper to bring in, despite how slow Canada Post is.

I believe that marking them off as gifts instead of merchandise also helps out. Correct me if I am wrong kimmer.

........Yes, gifting would help, when it is legit, customs is scrutinizing everything....if the item value is under $50.00 usd we dont get dinged any taxes.......but then again they r skeptical as 2 the value they think it should b.......i know they r only trying 2 do their job, but judging by the last few items i have had go thru customs they r very careless when they open, check/inspect the items then there lame attempt 2 reseal the package is laughable at best........my new 4 core radiator is scratched all 2 s%^&t from there carelessness.........and there is nothing we can do about it as they will not take any responseability 4 it.....ive tracked some items 2 canada customs, that r over a year, still havent recieved them, i tell u, they have every lame excuse in the book............kim.....................Claudius....it is the stuff i get shipped usps that i have all the problems with.....

The problem with declaring a lower value or a "gift" is when there is a lost or damaged item. The insurance is only going to pay what is written on the invoice/receipt. If it's a gift, you'll have to prove your cost or the actual value of the item which can cause a major delay in getting repaid. That's probably the reason some people overvalue them. With unreliable shippers, you're always having to file claims and not get paid for your time. The paperwork can be a real pain....

Good point Mark.

You might have to have a place in the US where stuff is shipped and you come pick it up there. It might help with all the problems with customs. Hope all work out for all the buyers in Canada

I have also had customs put a value on an item that was way above the declared on shipping tag. But shipping usps is the only way to go to avoid outrageous broker fees. Robert

I feel for you oldkimmer. My father runs a pack and ship store and we see it all the time. It seems there is no good way to get stuff there both safe AND cheap. Too bad because it's the only country I really don't mind sending parts to. It doesn't seem foreign. With that being said, I haven't had anything take too long to get there but I have had Canadians expect me (seriously, with attitude) to sell them parts or cars at less than half price because of shipping/customs. Sorry, but that's not my fault, I can only deal so much on some things.
I see a business opportunity. Set up a shop/warehouse close to the border a few places along the "line" and have people ship stuff there, then let them pick it up. Could be a full time thing if you think about it (not just car stuff, but EVERYTHING). I know, still a pain since not everyone lives 10 minutes above the USA border...

It's already being done by many business's close to the border. I live 1 1/2 hours from the border and it still saves me money to go get the bigger items. I just had a tranny shipped from Michigan to Calais, Maine for $182, if I had it shipped the other 70 miles it was going to be $600 plus. I just bought an expensive piece of furniture and had it shipped to the border, total savings with me to go get it will be about $1400 compared to the cost of buying the exact same piece here.

I just have everything shipped to Pembina Parcel, couple miles past the Emerson border check on the USA side. THey will accept Fed Ex UPS and USPS. Make sure you name is on outside of box .
They charge $5.00 per item. Make sure you have a copy of payment for the border. They even let you know when it arrives. No problems at all crossing back. No brokers or 1 month delays.
I picked up 4 boxes, 3 ebay and 1 from a member here just on Saterday.
You should have seen all the tires that were there.

That is a great concept! Are there any Albertans who have heard of something like this, say in the Shelby, MT area?

For the members who live around the Fraser Valley in British Columbia there are at least a couple of places in Sumas, WA that could be used for a US address. The one I use is Package Express and their service is excellent and you can even walk across the border to pick up packages.

That's the one I use, nice people that run it I have been there so much they know my name lol.8)

I just prefer that someone selling me something put the true value paid on it as well as ship via USPS whenever possible. Slow doesn't matter - cost does though......those thieving courier companies rip you off with their brokerage fees.

I believe I have answered my own question and I want to share my new information with other readers.

There is a company called Montana Shipping Outlet and they have facilities in Sweet Grass, MT and Eureka, MT. Sweet Grass is appropriate for Albertans and Eureka is for the BC interior residents. Their business is the same as others noted in this thread; they make money by making it cheaper for Canadians to get goods across the border.

Their web site is found at: http://www.montanashipping.com/

After calling and speaking with them, here is my understanding of how they operate.
1) Prices per package, by weight, are: 1-20lbs @$4; 21-40 lbs @$6; sliding scale upwards thereafter; pallet shipments are at least $20
2) They deal with USPS, all major couriers, and national freight companies.
3) You need to have items shipped to their address, in your name.
4) You need to send them an e-mail to let them know what is coming or they will not accept it.
5) They send you an e-mail when things arrive and you go retrieve them.

You just have to throw in a shopping trip down to Great Falls for a long weekend to take advantage of the import allowances if you plan to ship big dollar amounts.

I think thier fees are a bit high, but thats because the place I deal with has never charged more than $3.

If you live far from the Border as many of us do there are few options. USPS is the cheapest but many vendors will not ship this way. Its ok for smaller less valuable items. I have a customs broker who has an office in Sweetgrass that will accept shipments but their brokerage and delivery fees aren't any cheaper than getting UPS to take it right to my door. It does save if I can get free or cheap shipping within the US but the weight restriction is about 50 lbs. Over the years the best money saver has been to bring in a whole bunch of items together which only works when I'm doing a whole car. I just have to realize how much I'm saving over all by bringing stuff in versus getting hosed by Canadian distributors who tack on an extra 30% for importing the item for me.

........Thanks 4 all the replys guys.......being 4+ away from the border is not really an option to have stuff shipped close 2 it..........kim...........

I have shipped to Canada and Find when I try to quote a price it's way off..and Find the extra Paper work s pain in the A$$..
