spam vs scrapple

-
Not a big fan of Spam. Its always amazes me how popular Spam is in Hawaii, where its available in almost every restaurant (including McDonalds), and where a case of Spam is considered a nice wedding gift. Spam Musubi is a favorite in Hawaii (basically sushi substituting Spam for the raw fish).
Scrapple would get my vote, but haven't had it in years. Served with an egg (over easy) on top, and mix the egg and scrapple up together on your plate with a fork. Oh yeah, great breakfast food.

I grew up in Alberta and I remember this as Canada's answer to Spam ...

every once in a great while I like a spam sandwhich.Fried till it's blackened on the edges and lots of yellow mustard.Scrapple I think I've heard of but never seen it can anybody post a pic?

ok heres the deal on scrapple,,it is mainly a mid atlantic region item,,im not sure if it came from the amish or not,, im thinking if it came from the amish,,it would be available in other parts of the country where the amish live,, wisconsin,,,indiana,, pa,, but its mainly available in PA,NJ,DE,MD

it is said to be all the left overs from a pig that are not used in any other pork type meat,, my father worked for oscar meyer all his life,, told me if you like eating it,, you wont want to know whats in it,,

it is usuall fried crispy on the out side,, and a little moist on the inside and spicy,,mostly eatin with ketchup im PA,,, if not cooked properly its too mushy for my liking,,,

lots of areas have there own items that cant be gotten in other places,,, i lived in chicago for many years,,,and i sure miss the chicago hot dog and a sand wich called an italian beef,,puts the philly cheese steak to shame,,,

a case of Spam is considered a nice wedding gift. Spam Mosaby is a favorite in Hawaii (basically sushi substituting Spam for the raw fish).

Also considered a nice gift here in parts of Alabama (goes splendidly with a nice, Budwiser fountain).

Spam Sushi may possibly be the most brilliant idea I've ever heard.

Spam Musubi: Spam grilled with a light teriyaki flavor with rice and wrapped in seaweed. Kitchen stores in Hawaii sell acrylic molds to form the rice cake to the size of a slice of Spam (though I would guess that you could use the Spam can itself). Very popular in restaurants in Hawaii.

hmmm

I was born in PA (first 10 years in Lancaster county) but never heard of scrapple (or dont remember), had to ask my parents about it. Looked for it by the spam today in store, nothing. I think the worst of spam, but never really gave it a good try as far as i can member.

found these cleaning my parents house today though....

Spam Haikus:

Pink tender morsel,
Glistening with salty gel.
What the hell is it?

Ears, Snouts and innards,
A homogeneous mass.
Pass another slice

Cube of cold pinkness
Yellow specks of porcine fat.
Give me a spork please.

Old man seeks doctor.
"I eat SPAM daily", he says.
Angioplasty

Highly unnatural,
The tortured shape of this "food".
A small pink coffin.

haha

well. I dont know if this is truly a fair comparison. Spam is very consistant. (BTW, the spam museum is in the state of Minnesota). Scrapple is more of a generic term and has differing recipes depending on what part of PA (or where-ever) you are in. My gran-dad was from the Uniontown area,SW part of the PA, and he got his scrapple from a local place that made it just for a small area. he was of dutch and german decent but not Amish. That scrapple was good! Made fresh with no preservatives (salt maybe).
Spams ok but I'll vote for the scrapple. BTW, I was born in Vineland NJ. Yes scrapple is a regional thing.

I was lucky growing up. My grand parents had a smokehouse and several cows, pigs and chickens. Wild pigs raided the garden so pork was plenty. When a hog was put down the hams were salt or sugar cured then smoked. The head was made into Souse meat (head cheese in Europe)This was formed in a loaf pan and froze for later. The butcher kept the skin, ribs and some of the organ meat all that was left went into sausage. My grandmother grew sage and peppers so most of the sausage was spicy. If a wild pig we had bacon, I don't know why.
Any way. Souse meat is great
Spam is good. I like to grill it

I know that souse is not the same as scrapple, but it is the closest thing we have and it ROCKS! Spicier the better.

Just re-visited this thread wanna say thanks for the clarifications/pics of scrapple.
But I feel we need to add the south of the border version of spam/scrapple-Chorizo.anybody? Years ago I worked for a large nursery where there were a lot of Mexican imigrants.Everyday we would chow down on chorizo and eggs in a tortilla washed down with a cold beer. Then one day I read the ingrediants = cows salivary glands and lymph nodes .I just can't enjoy it anymore ...

Used to eat Spam all the time. Tried Scrapple once, and almost threw up after the first bite.

That's the difference to me - lol.
