I have heard alot about these but dont know much about them.From what i understand they come out of a Dakota/Durrango with a 318 /360 engine. Is this correct? are they year specific? I would like to get one but want to make sure i get the correct one. I have a 1973 318 Thanks of course to you all........
 
I have seen them on '89 - '93 full size trucks as well Engine size doesn't matter. They are a must have when running most headers, and a good idea with all headers. David
 
not trying to hijack here, but I am also looking for one to put on a '74 360. Pretty sure that is the same starter they would use on the 318 correct? Do any of the starters need to be modified at all or do they fit right into an LA engine? How about wiring, is it the same as the stock starter?

same same. i got mine from napa for a '97 dakota with a 5.2
 
The most you may have to modify is you may have to split the plastic piece that holds the two wires to the starter. but I cant guarantee that. there pretty much a direct bolt on. these starters will bolt directly to any V8 as well as \6. I'm about 99% sure they even the RWD V6's. David
 
Great timing on this thread. Are there different starters compared to flywheel teeth? I just tried to bump over my car for the first time with the new 727, new torque converter and new starter and I get a sound that sounds like stripped teeth. I only did it once so not to damage anything. I do have to say that the battery was mostly dead and I tried this with the charger on it (so I don't know if it doesn't have enough juice to engage the flywheel- is that possible?)

Ok The original starter on my 273 had a run on due to a worn out friction washer.
I thought I would go ahead and install a mini starter. Got one from a 93 dDakota at the parts yard. Dropped my original starter. Went under the car with the mini starter and found the original bolts dont work. I stuck a new friction washer in my original stater and put it back in service.
It's been so long that I can't recall exactly what was different. I did pick up the 2 bolts I needed later on at Lowes but right now I can't recall what size those are more than 7/16 X something.
It could be that my original starter is mounted with one bolt and one stud with nut where the mini starter has 2 threaded holes requiring two bolts.
Anyway... It might be a simple bolt on for most but not all. Have fun
 
My mini starter bolted right on. I was even able to use the stud (where the TTI instructions said it wouldn't work). By the way, the starter works great! It was the battery not pulling the starter completely into the ring gear.
 
In 2005 I put in a mini starter from Advance Auto Parts in My 67 273 Dart. I purchsed a starter for a 1992 Dodge Dakota 318 ci. Have had no problems. It fit right in.

The starter from a '99 Ram is much smaller than one from a '95 Dakota which is much smaller than one from a mid-80's Diplomat, if that helps ya.
 
I stole my mini-starter from the 94 Dodge full-size van. The starter went into the 69 318 fish car and the van got the old crusty big starter since there was plenty of room.
 
all Dakota's from 1987-2000+ with the 3.9 v6 or 318/360 came with them as well as the 1988-2000 dodge ram's with the 3.9/318/360 as well as the 1990+ ram vans with the same engine. mini starters also known as (nippen)denso starters are good and the only thing that ever goes wrong with them electrical is the solenoid contacts which can be replaced for about $2 without replacing the solenoid

I think I have a mini starter that I may sell for anyone who is interested, would need to be cleaned up, was pulled from a 1996 dodge ram with 318
 
I love the Chrysler starter Whine.

I had to replace the starter on my 383 Convertible. The guy behind the counter was a Mopar guy and wanted me to switch to the mini to get rid of the whine. I refused because I have always liked the unique sound that lets everybody know that a Mopar is starting up.

You used to be able to tell the make of a car by its starter sound.

the whine from factory chrysler starters is from the 2:1 gear reduction to turn over our beasts:D meaning the starter motor is turning twice as fast as the starter drive, I love the whine of a factory chrsysler start but unfortunatly not all exhaust choices will work with them
