OK I have a 73 318 and a 67 273 Bellhousing and flywheel.The bellhousing will work on the 318 but the flywheel will not,right???

I have no clue as to why it won't work. Was the 273 externally balanced?

Not sure. I know the crank recess changed in 68? but I don't know about the OD of the crank where it fits the flywheel

If the flywheel is in nice shape, and that is the case, you could have it turned out if you have a bud with a lathe large enough.

I sure would be interested to know why. Learn sumffin new everyday.

The reason is because the 67 273 has an internally balanced steel crank and the 73 318 is a cast crank that is externally balanced.

Nope. NO 318 was ever externally balance. You're right about the 73 havin a cast crank though.

Correct me if I am wrong about this but another thing to think about on the 273 bellhousing is that they were small for a 9 1/2" clutch. The larger bellhousing for a 10 1/2" clutch would hold a little better. But if the 9 1/2" clutch will do the job, use it. Just food for thought.

You are absolutely correct. I had a moment there. Only the 360 and late cast crank 340 were externally balanced. :eek:ops:

I don't think so, all LA 318's are internally balanced. The 273 used a smaller diameter pressure plate and disk.

I think the reason Hollander says it wont interchange is because it is a 9 inch rather than 10 inch. I would not be afraid to use it.

The bell housings are different. My 67 Barracuda 273-2bbl 4-speed used an Auburn style 9 1/2 inch clutch and a 123 tooth flywheel. The 318/4-speed combinations use a borg & beck style 10 1/2 inch clutch and 143 tooth flywheel. The flywheel is larger to accommodate the larger clutch disk and pressure plate and therefore the bell housing is different as well to move the starter farther away from the engine to work with the bigger flywheel. I'm sure the z-bar is a little shorter as well. You can use the smaller bell housing and same 123 tooth flywheel and move up to a 10 inch clutch. That is what I did to eliminate trying to find all those parts to do the swap.
