guess someone didn't know how to re assemble a slant 6...now there is a loud knock from the number one cylinder, compression is great at 150 per cylinder, sounds like a wrist pin knock, too high up to be rod journal. So 4000.00 later for rebuilding the motor and tranny, guess who looks the fool now. Couldn't have asked for a worse weekend. Well I got 15 minutes of run time out of it!

Well I hope you paid someone who will stand behind it. ..........................

PLEASE tell me it's not stock for that price.
PLEASE.........:shock::shock::shock:

Wow. You could have done the work yourself in your own garage for less than half that price. Maybe it would have took longer, but still!!!!! $k for a slant 6 rebuild???? Better have some real nice performance mods.

Sounds like a "twofer" to me. Ya got 15 minutes of run time and reason to find another builder! I do hope the one you used will make it right for you.

Sometimes the only way for something to get done right is to do it yourself, I wouldn't go back to that builder.

omg, please tell me your your kidding.i know you are not,ti really sucks to have had this happen.so what are you going to do now?

Dont cry yet. check the exhaust gasket. I bought rod bearings, a new piston and and a set of $3 exhaust gaskets for a 'bad' piston swap in my Mazda pick up. I was sure it was a rod knock, piston skirt or pin issue. turns out it was only the exhaust gasket that was bad! Sure sounded like a knock from hell to me. 4K for a rebuild seems pretty high so
I hope the builder will help out.

LOL research really could have helped you. :banghead:

In real life, 4k you could have a nice turbo setup included. Rock solid, just sayin.

Many years ago, my first slant was rebuilt by a college auto shop - I was in another phase - tune-up, I think, Anyway, came time to drop it back my little Dart GT and it fired right up. And, for the whole time and many, many thousands of miles, it had what sounded like the same thing - wrist pin knock - only at idle, and kind of off and on. When I sold it to buy my 68 convertible GT (with another slant), it was still running fine. But with the money you paid, your rebuilder should darn well help you out!

I just recently had my engine re-built, everything new and all the standard machine work had to be done including valve guides ect and cost was 1500 dollars

So now you feel even better right??? 2K for the engine and 2K for the Transmission.. I feel for you and would just go talk to the builder maybe its something simple...Bill

Mistakes happen. Have him come listen to it and tell you what he want's to do. I don;t think $4K is unreasonable depending on what was used and what was done. You just need it to do what you paid him to make it do.

thanks for all the "support" guess I deserve what i have gotten considering the sources. So instead of support I get ridiculed and slapped around by all the shadetrees that I guess are all professional engine builders. I myself dont think I did too bad for all new components except the block. And yes it does have some fairly expensive parts in it, and yes the builder was willing to stand by his workmanship. Turns out to just have needed the popped head gasket replaced and the lash reset. The engine and trans run great. To those of you that truly tried to lend support...thank you; and to those of you that think you could have done a cheaper better job...I don't give a rats ***, it's my car, my money. Thanks for nothing, I'm done with this sorry *** "forum"

Cool, glad we could help! Head gasket and valve lash is chump change compared to a piston. You'll be back, I hope.

PS> How was compression good at 150 when your head gasket was blown? That is strange. Even valve lash dictates cylinder pressure to a degree.

I agree with him...Why when someone is asking for help do people feel the need to kick the person even more when he is down??? 2K for an engine is not a bad price and 2k for a transmission is not bad either...Things cost differently in parts of the country...Here on the east coast everything is GOLD plated and cost a fortune...His first post tells you he felt like he got ripped off so why kick him in the balls when he has already gotten it shoved up his a--...Bill

yup.
At least the guy stood by it and it's fixed.

the piston rod could be in backwards causing this

I for one apologize if what I posted offended you in any way. These cars we have mean a lot to us, so we do what we can to keep them going. Sounds like you got some good advice from some of the more experienced users of this forum. Keep up with your posts. We want to see you on here as much as possible.

A young friend of mine was very upset one day when I stopped by. Seems he was out hammerin' on his 93 Mustang Cobra that he bought new (Supercharger added later) and when he got home, it sounded like there was a bad knock. I had him start it up and by feeling around the head to header gasket area (while it was still cold) I found the leak. Didn't even have to take the header all the way off, just loosened it enough to slip out the old gasket and inserted the new.

Hey man, don't leave the site.

yes. prices differ a bunch for work in different parts of the country. whats a fair price in n y or ca is probably lot different than say here in s w Missouri.
please stay in the forum as people can sometimes come off different than what they really mean to. if someone wants to be hurtful, then I just politly tell then to " kiss my rebel A--!", and concentrate on those trying to lend good advice and comments! no harm done. LOL

And sometimes people misunderstand what others are saying. I personally didn't post any comment, but the price did shock me a bit.

Although the OP did leave out the fact in the first post that all he had was a block, now it makes sense for the engine cost. Parts to rebuild a 904 are 3-4 hundred for a stock build..

I'm glad he got it resolved and the builder stood behind it.
