Hey there guys and gals, I'm just starting to look at getting an a-body of some sort, and have some questions about pricing/purchasing. Hopefully the wealth of knowledge provided by all the seasoned veterans on here will help me make an informed decision.

My current situation is this, I went and looked at a h-code 1970 Duster. The dash VIN plate confirms the H, but there is no fender tag & no build sheet.

Visual specs/conditions as follows:

340 auto, rallye dash, disks up front, manual steering.

The car has previously had a paint job done, but nothing really in depth (didn't do door jambs, in trunk, under hood etc etc.). The rear quarters behind the rear wheels were replaced during the paint job. The spare tire well has some holes in it and needs replacement, otherwise floor boards are solid, frame sections are solid (frame has been tied with square tubing by a previous owner) and there looks to be no other large rust issues. Needs a windshield, full weather stripping replacement, antenna, some emblems (lots of little things).

Interior is in need of a full resto. Almost all the pieces are there, just worn out. It needs dash pieces, radio, headliner, door panels, original speedo is gone (replaced with an aftermarket one shoved into the original spot), front seats were switched to buckets and need covers, rear is the cloth that looks like burlap sack material. Carpet is good. Current owner also has a console to go in it, but it currently has a ratchet shifter that would have to be switched out, or modify the console to use the shifter (originally was a column shift car).

I checked the numbers on the engine and it looks to be the original 340 that came with the car. It runs, but has been toyed with. Has aluminum rad, upgraded MSD ignition, non-stock exhaust, battery relocated to trunk, different carb. Basically the engine should be pulled, cleaned up/detailed/painted and engine bay cleaned up/detailed also. Owner says that the posi is also starting to go, when the car warms up only one tire will hook up.

Anyways, long story short (thanks for reading!), what would the value of this car be pegged at currently needing a decent amount of work? Also, if I were to start restoring it to a reasonable condition what would the price range be in the future?

How much is the re-sale value affected with the lack of documentation confirming original options/confirmation of being a true h-code car? Is the VIN plate on the dash all that's needed to confirm it's an h-code, or are there other locations I can confirm this?

The seller is convinced that since it's an original/true h-code vehicle that the value of it will keep and it's a better 'investment' than getting a non h-code. My main concern is that with lack of fender tag & build sheet that that's not exactly true, because it can't be confirmed that it's an original h-code (other than 1 VIN plate) and there's nothing stating options/original build of the car.

I know that buying a vehicle in this condition and restoring it isn't about making money, at least that's not what I'm trying to accomplish by getting an old Mopar. I'm wanting something to toy with, restore to a driveable extent and just enjoy. BUT, I don't want to overpay for something, put a lot of money into it and be totally out of the ballpark/screwed because the original purchase wasn't an informed/smart one.

Thanks for reading guys, I look forward to your responses! I appreciate any help/information that can be provided (even if it's 'Go read this link!')

I paid less than that for mine last year. Mine is a legit H-Code and came with the build sheet and fender tag. Doesn't have the original motor though. Modded 360, 4 speed. Blue & white interior on mine is very good, original buckets from factory. Also had a repaint.

I wouldn't pay anywhere near what he's asking. Maybe half - even then it needs too much work. Depends on how much you can or want to do yourself.

That's maybe a 6k car with all the hacked up, tied frame and all. Most nicely and I mean correctly restored 70-72 duster/ demons only sell in the low to mid 20's. You can get a nice driver not needing much all painted just gas and go for between 12k and 20k and these would be H code.

"No, I will not send more pics"!!!???... Pass, and buy from a member here, who will certainly cooperate and help you find just the right car!! For that money, that car should be cherry, and as you know, its NOT!!!

BTW you can verify it's an H code body by checking the radiator support and the speeker shelf for the last 7?? Digits that should match the vin tag. Not having the fender tag hurts the value the sheat helps but doesn't hurt it, lots of cars missing the sheets and a majority of LA built mopars didn't get sheets tossed in.

Just for comparison a mint 1970 340 4spd duster with all doc was listed here in Vancouver bc for 20k numbers matching and it disappeared fast

Save up your money and take a trip out to Moparfest(New Hamburg,Ontario)it,s out by Kitchener,On.It,s the biggest Mopar show in Canada with a section with Cars for sale. You will have a chance to look over many cars there at different prices/shape.You might just find what your after.Heck for the right money I may let one of mine go for the right price.LOL

I agree with others, price is a little high for what your getting. If you are interested in it confirm the body serial numbers first!
You can get a lot better car for the kinda coin. Keep in mind fixing/restoring/upgrading these old mopars can be costly if you don't shop around. There are a lot of nice cars on this website.
Don't be afraid to drive a little ways to look at a car. I went to California to pick up this Dart Sport, but it was worth every penny! I can look at cars here if need be. Just shoot me a P.M.

Saw that car down around Mimico Arena area. Looked a little heavy- maybe body filler in the quarters? That car will not sell fast at that number so you have time to have a good look at it and go in with your eyes wide open. Dont forget- that is his starting price. Only offer what you feel its worth to you in your market.

Fender tags are repoped all day long, like the guy said, if body numbers match dash vin? Its that car, in that year the eng block and trans had vin stamped in them, unless replacement block,.
If you want a project, check out what it will cost you to get it to condition you want, or look for car already done in your price range. Better to work with members on here than what you might run into on craigs list?????? At least on fabo no murderers!!! Some of us might have worped sense of humor!
All this number stuff, factory made car stuff...... Its upo to you, do ya want a duster with a 340 stuffed in it or one the assemblyline guy stuffed in i back in the day?? Are you the show car number guru purist type??? Or want just a fun light car with a 318 or 360 for maybe much less????? All depends on what floats your boat and what ya have to spend!??? The economy is flat, the collector car market is still soft, there are priobably 20 cars for sale for every 1 buyer, at least here in u s. My opinion....

Going by the postal code that car is about 5 minutes from me, however I've never seen it around. As everyone else has said that car is over priced. I paid much less for mine last year. There are nicer ones around for less money. Keep looking.

WAY overpriced. It's got shiney paint, and not much else. I'd wager he's got less than 1/2 his price in in as it sits. If it was in CT I'd be looking at it around $6K at most. If it had the rioght 340 parts that would help. Everything done cheaply or not done points to an owner looking to flip it.

I agree with everyone else, priced at about double what it's actually worth.
Keep looking.......

Thanks for all the input and info fellas. I was definitely thinking the price was high for being in such poor condition. Guy is firm on his price. When I went and looked at it to check the condition and numbers and interior I was kinda blown away with the overall poor condition of it. When I checked out the trunk and saw it needed a whole new pan the first thing the seller said was 'don't be thinking the price will change because of that, I'm firm on it'. My jaw almost dropped hearing that. Guess he really doesn't want to sell the car much. Probably just fishing.

Once again thanks do the input. I'm in no hurry to get a 'fun/project' vehicle right now, so I'll keep looking.

I've been to the New Hamburg show a couple times now and looked around at the cars for sale. The more I think of what I saw there the more I realize this guy's out to lunch price wise.

When I read your description of the paint job and the jambs not being done, I knew right off that the car was a wack job!!! Sort of fits its current owner anyway!!

Typical Canadian over pricing. Keep searching, the right one is out there.

Could also be he got the ultimatum from wifey "Sell that damn thing". So he places an ad at a ridiculous price that he knows it won't sell just to appease the dragon. Then he can show due diligence and say he is doing his best but buyers are cheap. Once she moves on to something new to ***** about he pulls the ad.

Not that I've ever done done that........Er.....Er.....
