Biohazard

The red parts require primer. I got ALL the red stuff primed today.

...and it felt good.

...so good, in fact, that I wanted to keep the momentum up and start on the red base coat. The conditions were so ideal that the primer was dry and absolutely ready for a color coat.

Getting it done:

Finished prepping several other dash components for paint.
That was actually the bulk of Thursday and Friday's work - just scrubbing, degreasing, and hitting them with either fine sandpaper or steel wool.

Here's my speaker plate, with a tip of the hat to FABO member blewbyoutobad.

So just to wrap up yesterday's work:
- everything that should be red got the needed base coat and is curing before clearcoating. That's both steering column collars and the outer sleeve plus the mount for the park brake mechanism.

- the firewall plates, speaker mounting plate, sleeve for the park brake, and the brake pedal are all finished in black.

- did NOT finish the gear select shaft due to my paint of choice not being available locally.

Work kept me way too busy to get a thing done today followed by wet, rainy weather toward the end so, no clearcoat got put down. :sad face: plus, the inside of my 'dub stinks of paint fumes because I never was able to pull everything out like I wanted to.

Maybe I can get some fish-oriented shopping done online. ;)

Ordered up some parts:

- steering coupler rebuild kit

- lower steering column bearing

My upper steering column bearing is fine. Just needs to be flushed and repacked. However, the upper c-clip broke during removal so I need to find a replacement for that.

So this was my first go at this. I may, on a second attempt, actually make better and straighter cuts but somehow I don't think it is going to matter once installed. All I need now is an el Marko. For the price of that, and $1.99 for the felt butterfly, I got a new HVAC felt which isn't even reproduced anywhere. :)

Question for anyone following this: the reproduction seals for the firewall are made of this thin, white open-cell foam. If you've ever ordered any repro firewall stuff, you know what I'm talking about. Is this some really awesome gasket material or just "correct" for the purists? I'm really considering fabricating some of my own out of a denser, closed-cell type of material for better function - particularly in critical leak areas like the wiper pivot holes.

Input greatly appreciated.

As crazy as it sounds I know Alex from Brazil uses some dense foam like used in a flip flop or shoe. Im sure there is something in sheets probably more dense and better equiped for those seals. Great job on the car!:blob:

Thanks! Yeah, I've got some sheet material that just seems like it would be 'better' but, I'm not necessarily certain that there is anything wrong with the white stuff - unless somebody chimes in on that. I do plan on driving the car when it's complete so she may see some rain and I want to be prepared.

Wrapping up my work week out here: the plan was to re-do the entire steering column but the need to replace some worn out pieces have put me back a little. Everything associated with the column has been cleaned and repainted so, once the new parts show up, it's a simple matter of re-assembling with the appropriate lubricants.

I still need to finish the instrument panel itself and do something with the radio but I believe I can then begin reinstalling everything dash related and re-wrapping my wire harness.

Just for kicks...

I scanned all the old paper photographs of my first Barracuda...also a '69 fastback 318.
I'm going to be posting them here as we go with the red one.

Here she is in her original green paint, not long after I bought her in 1987. I think I paid $850 back then.

Here's the tired old mill. It looks a tad more orange in this photo but it's still just a 2bbl 318.

Looking at this pic reminds me if the foot pump windshield spray system. I thought that was so cool and really would like to retrofit that setup into my current car but the last thing I need is tubes of water inside the cabin. Keeping the rain out will be hard enough.

dash speaker info

Anyone who's shopped for a replacement 4 x 10" has seen this common plate design where, beyond the 4 corner screws, you also have a pair of mount points off the far ends...and you've probably wondered if these end holes would line up with the factory mount points.

Well, they do not.

You'll definitely need a mounting plate whether you find one or make your own.

Cheers!

I am just stumped as to where to place these pieces from the firewall insulation kit.
A little help??

I think....... Cowl pieces go on the outer area behind the dash frame and against the door hinge mount area. The cut out on the driver side surrounds the horn relay.

The one Piece does not look familiar.

Keep up the awesome work....

Hey man, great buildup so far! I just wanted to let you know that other piece goes on the front of the ac/heater box. The side that rest against the inner firewall.

Mine looks backwards from yours, but here is a pic I found of mine. Hope this helps!

It does help. Seems I may have ended up with an extra piece as I already have a piece that covers the HVAC box where you are showing. If that's right, it may be an A/C vs. Non-A/C difference.

Thanks to you, as well, and to everyone following my driveway build.

Some things can't be done when you're away from the main carcass.

Installed/connected all throttle linkage.

With the throttle goes the transmission linkage. Got it all done with synth grease at all pivots and bushings.
