Why did you remove the bumper guards?

I'm thinking about removing the bumper guards on my 72 Dart Swinger. From what I have read they were standard equipment in 72. Why did you keep or remove them?
 
mine are still on but I was thinking about taking them off tomorrow....72 dart swinger also....I think they look much better without front or rear bumper guards
 
The only vehicle I own with bumper guards is my 'Lil Red Express. I'm leaving them on because it's a relatively rare truck. I don't think that they add anything positive to the looks of a vehicle and I don't really think they're likely to protect the bumper much.
 
69 swinger with them and still have them on, even with fiberglass front bumper. I just picked up a 72 Demon and don't think they look all that good. ill probably remove them. 72 was standard equipment???

I like the 69 guards and I liked the ones that were on my 71. As they got bigger the got worse looking.
 
I'm adding F &R to the Dart wagon, Barracuda and Charger.
 
I kind of like em on.

I like the way 72 darts look with them on.

My 72 dart is an LL23 Swinger special (bare bones) so it came from the factory with no guards. I was thinking it looks like something is missing so I have a pair of guards that I bought for it but I have not put them on yet. I think the fronts will just bolt on but to put guards on the rear I think I might have to find another bumper that had them because the car's original rear bumper never had them and there are no holes to bolt them on.

They are on there for a reason. In the early 70s, automakers had to pass more stringent crash tests and the guards were part of the crash system. They have a purpose.
 
I read somewhere that it was a common thing in the old days to often "bump" the car in front or behind you in a parking lot or when parking on the street. It also was common to lock bumpers with the way most bumpers were shaped in early auto days which actually cased more damage and caused an embarrassing scene.

The little guards simply prevented the bumpers from locking if you accidently bumped another car which is why they were not federally mandated till the mid 70s but highly recommended for most people.

They were an extra cost option until the mid-70s when they became federally mandated in an vein attempt to make the whole car safer.

I took mine off because its a muscle car. And I am not an old lady



so you take them off and send them to old ladies :jocolor:

And actually a lot of muscle cars did have them from the factory

I had taken then off many years ago for a cleaner look and now I wish I would of kept them for the oe look. Will be looking for a set in very good shape.
 
on my 74 Scamp, they were the first thing I "messed with". They came right off.
 
Took them off the Barracuda because they had some rust
issues. I think I gave them to someone here on the Forum.

I like the cleaner look without them.

I like the clean look without them. My 66 was born with them but I took them off a couple months ago when I had the bumper rechromed. tmm
