So I have this ticking sound from the car. I thought it was possibly a exhaust leak, so I tightened up all bolts as much as possible. The wild card is that the header collectors don't have gaskets at all. I don't know if that could cause this tick. When I wen't to adjust the rockers, all rockers were within spec, maybe .001-.002 looser on some, but they had not been re adjusted after break in and these locknuts on the cheap *** rockers I had were well, cheap.. Also I was using incorrect rockers (ford) instead of chevy. These are the magnum style heads with stud mount, not shaft. The rockers were also hitting the guide plates on the very bottom of the rockers, I have pictures also. I don't think it was a lifter because I did the old screw driver and or wood block on the valve cover and everything sounded the same. Please tell me what you think.

TO BE CLEAR: I ordered all new stuff from hughes, rockers, studs, guide plates.

If it gets louder under a load it's exhaust. I've also had a 904 break a converter snout on the pump drive slot and make that sound while not causing any trans problem. It sounded more like a cracked flexplate though. I had a similar issue with 340 manifolds on 318 heads.

Interesting, the gaskets are REMFLEX so I thought they are not suppose to leak. The converter is brand new and the flex plate is used, used by me that is. It sounds like exhaust to me too hmm

Regardless that the header bolts (at the cylinder heads) are tight, there could
still be a leak there, including a broken weld where a head pipe attaches to the
cylinder head flange......It happenned to me.

Sounds mechanical to me.

Use a piece of hose to your ear and see if you can narrow it down, also a mechanics stethiscope.

Check flex plate first. Chased that **** for a week. Ford and Chevy rockers? I'm no Magnum guy but.....?

Does my tick sound like this tick?

That's lifter/rocker noise,, with one exceptionally loud one..

I'd put the proper rocker gear on there,, before you do some damage..

-Thats not a tick; its a clack. And clacks are almost always rocker-arms. Could be lash, or stud, or other interference, or a breather. To me it sounds like a typical old style GM small block in need of a valve adjustment. Those arms have a rather unique sound.
-Sometimes a fuel pump arm will clack if the return spring isnt doing its job, but its in a different location.
-And sometimes; just because you can do something, doesnt mean you should.
-Exhaust valve clatter can be heard really well in the header-pipes using a long 3/8drive extension stuck in your ear; intakes, with it sitting on the intake runners.Practically impossible to miss-diagnose.
-Good luck.

Sweet. I appreciate this in-depth help/description of my situation. I was thinking the same thing that the rockers are the issue. So I will install everything and get back to you all!

Why are you not running the magnum rocker set up?? I would ditch all that other stuff and get the correct components in there? I have magnum heads on my LA an the only tick I had was the lifters to start with. Yours sounds like lifters, or mechanical to me.

I guess you missed all the post I made before, but I hope it's not a lifter. Hoping just the stupid oversized rockers.

No I didnt, I just dont get why you would interchange with Chevy parts? Cost??? Ditch all that and get the OE stuff in there and at least eliminate that as part of the issue. Also are you running Magnum heads on a LA block?? If you are did you clearance the heads for the push rods??? Could you give a few more specifics on your engine build.

You clearly did. 1st stated I used ford rockers...And magnum stuff is not stud mounted it's bolt mounted. So anything after that is ford or chevy. Why the hell would I run stock stuff in a 410 stroker with spring pressure more than enough for a 251-260 camshaft? I also told you that I purchased all the correct stuff from hughes but you clearly missed that too. Everything is fine. Heads were done by MRL PERFORMANCE. He set them up to run on LA block.

I don't need to throw this thread off topic. Either politely assist me with my sound issue, or move on. Clearly I purchased the correct stuff and going to install it.

And I also stated earlier my plan was to install all new hughes stuff and cross that off list. Thanks for the tips.

Wow! Someone is mad that his engine is making noise. Asks for help with vague *** specifics about the engine build.. Sorry I couldn't interpret what you typed.. How about you loose your attitude, I was politely helping you..

Next time give engine specifics!!! You said nothing about it being a stroker, who built the heads or anything..

Best of luck figuring out your issues!

Can you be more specific about exactly what valve train setup you are running? Maybe part numbers? I missed it if you posted that info.

I am not running it anymore, but I also don't have the part numbers for the rockers also. They stopped making these rockers a long time ago. And they are fords, at the time that I purchased them (6 years ago) I read that ford and chevy rockers were the same, but they actually are not because ford rockers actually hang over toward the exhaust side a little more than a chevy rocker. The stud and guide plate conversion is the CRANE conversion kit, which is suppose to be for mild engines. I am changing it all because I was not smart enough to do the research before I threw everything on my stroker engine.

I am running ford self aligning rockers on guide plates, which is a BIG NO NO. That is myself thinking it would be okay. I am fixing this whole situation and going with the HUGHES setup, which has stronger studs and better rockers.

I have changed the oil, installed the new rockers, remeasured for new pushrods, replaced old studs and set the lash on all the rockers. Fired her up and she sounds a lot cleaner. No more ticking noise. Glad this was an easy fix!
