I recently picked up a '68 GTS hood for my convertible. The problem is the hood is nicely painted a gloss black with some metallic in it. My car, as you can see, is a flat baby blue. The long term plan for the car is not baby blue, but I cannot afford to have the car painted for a few years - so painting everything to match is not an option currently.

So - do I mount the hood in gloss black metallic and roll with it? Do I store the hood as incentive to save up the dough to have the whole thing painted? or, do I do my best to have someone match the baby blue and have the hood shot to match the car? (and if the last option, what are the odds of matching paint that I don't have the code for and that was applied 20 years ago?)

Thoughts?

Paint the 68 hood in Hot Rod Black Semi Gloss and install it on the car.

Id try to match it, IMO the black hood would look like you stuck it on

Your future involves paint so scuff it, hit it with flat black and roll with it. It will probably look pretty good against the light blue of the car. IMHO

Go to a paint supply center that has a color match camera.

It's kind f an art and results can vary by the operator.

The guy I use is 100%, even on difficult to match things.

Painting a hood is a great way to learn how to paint, as it's a relatively small workable area and fairly easy to sand and re-shoot if necessary.

When I had my 67 painted white I went with a gloss black hood and engine bay. I like it and that's what counts. My 73 is original white engine bay and semi gloss hood and it's a pain to take care of.
Do what makes you happy!

Color match it. Your car is too nice and clean to run a blacked out hood.

What inserts are you going to use?

I had to check the thread first to see if you had a pic up, good job. On a convertible in as good of shape as that, your not going for racer or rat rod.
Store it.

^^^ this

that is a non-metallic solid so color matching it shouldn't be that hard or very expensive because you could match that with a cheaper single stage system.

...color match. It will look odd glossy metallic black, and
even if you like it a bit, you'll tire of it.

UPDATE: Thank you all for all of your input.

After talking to some friends, it turns out I have some ties to a local paint guru who swears he can match it - so I am headed down the paint match road. I do like a hot rod black hood, but with my white top I think it would have been too contrasting.

I will update the thread with some pics when I get her painted and mounted - because I know we all like pics!

Your car is a 67, it won't look right on there, no siree Bub, no way, no how. I have a 68.....Just Sayin'

Definitely color match or store it. A satin black hood on your car with a white top would look like shitballs!

Add the 1972 snorkel scoop to the hood & save the 68 hood.
That scoop in black would look bitchin on there.

Id say, colour match it. You have a beaut of a car now and with the colour it is IMO the black would be to much. Maybe a different opinion if it was a different colour (Car)

rock the black and who cares what people say.

Hell i am rocking my 67 in primer with a black scoop and no trim, just the dart GT badge and the Dodge letter on hood and the dart GT trunk panel. People always stop to look at the car. But she sounds mean and can roll with the others Most just have to look because its not the normal belly button/ chevy car rolling by

Slap it on there and see what it looks like, if you like it, keep it black, if not, color match it!!!

I did the same thing with my 67 and color matched it. Still loving it. 68 inserts too.

UPDATE: Last night, the color matched hood is finally decorated and mounted. Just a mild 273 under the hood, but driving it to work today she felt more like a 340 - LOL.
