Ok, so i live in west Texas. The summer time it gets hot, like really effin hot. I can hardly stand to work in my shop.

So i'm talking to the guy who fixes **** in the facility i work at. In his work area is a big assed industrial box fan. He says motor locked up, bad bearings. Too much money for a new one, its going to go to the scrap yard. I asked him if i could have it. He says sure. Take it home.

Its a baldor electric motor. This things about 25 years old. I'm sure i can get new bearings, and new motor brushes, and be out the door for about $35-$40.

Its gonna cost me a lunch. My buddy is bringing it home for me in the back of his truck after work today. Fan box is 4 ft square , and 1.5 ft deep

i was gonna say "i like them too" but then i realized thats not what you meant

Pretty much any old electric motor will work in that.

Begs the question can one ever have enough fan or big *** for that matter??????? Somewhere there will be CFM specs on that bad boy!

Nice thing about that is you can pulley it so it moves lot of air without the wind speed.

That is an excellent score!! Now you just need to fabricate a swamp cooler for it and you will beating the heat like nobody's business!

ive been at tent revivals where they got a big ole cooler full of ice angled in front of the fan
sure makes a difference

In Iraq I fabricated more than one swamp cooler, they are super easy to make and its crazy how much sqft they can cool down. I used tin A/C ducting, whatever heavy duty fans/motors I could get ahold of(even used a garbage disposal), for the water evap I used pallet wood with strips of cardboard honeycomb stapled to it, and just mre boxes lined with trash bags for the tank. The commercial ones have systems that pump water to the top and it trickles down the evap medium, but too keep it simple I would just leave a water bottle cut in half in the water tank. every 45min or so just pour some water across the top and saturate it. it won't be chilly, but it def changes a miserable hot shop into something much more bearable

Just an FYI. There are refurb Port-a-Cool units (swamp cooler on wheels) for sale on Woot from time to time. Refurb Price is more in line with reality. We bought a 2200. These are made in Center Tx. Great for the shop.

Those work great except when your doing bodywork and have bare metal everywhere. I thought about a port a cool for home then dismissed it. I have a small 1000 btu window air cond unit. I attached ducting to it to discharge the hot air outside the shop, and i angle it at my workbench or wherever i am working. We have a monster 4 foot port a cool in my department at work. We ressurected it when they were gonna toss it. It works great. Now its chained down so it doesnt walk off.

I'm of the opinion that those are more for Big *** Noise.

Squirrel cage fans from old HVAC units, now....

Surface flash rust from running a portacool around bare metal. It puts a ton of moisture in the air. You will get flash rust on bare panels using one of those, i dont care if you live in death valley and use one.

I have a six foot version of that big *** fan awaiting my new garage if I ever build it, its from my grandparents commercial green house, it moves alot of air, but it does it with the blades turning real slow, so it does not make alot of noise.

My buddy dropped it off tonight. Holy crap this thing is big. I need to figure out a good storage spot in the shop for this thing when its not in use.
