So I put a hurst super street shifter in my 66 barracuda, followed all the instructions to the t. Now when I shift 1st and 2nd are good but 3rd and 4th seem to be backwards, 3rd is next to 2nd and 4th is next to 1st. Any ideas from anyone?

You have the 3-4 lever upside down, or you have an OD gear box.

Had a friend in HS with a Mercury cougar and a three on the floor. 1st and reverse are on the same lever. He installed the lever upside down and didn't check it.

Fired it up to go to school the next day, put it in reverse stomped on it and drive right into his moms garage and smashed his crap up too.

That's what I thought, I checked the diagram from hurst and everything is where they say it should be, I turned the lever connecting rod to trans opposite what I had it and rod would not fit

do you mean that there isn't enough adjustment on the threaded end of the rod? Did you put it in neutral with the 1/4" pin in the shifter 1-2, 3-4 levers? disconnect the reverse lever at shifter, and see if that helps locating all the forward gears.

When I put the lever opposite of the hurst diagram I cant get it bent with enough length on the threaded end, it gets hung up on the crossmember

Can you take a picture of what you have? The levers both go up, meaning the rods are above the nut that holds the lever on. That slot in the lever is directional. You may have to flip the lever over as well as up.

I've had no experience with a super shifter. Is this in an a- body? As I recall, didn't the super shifter have straight rods? Are you sure it is made to fit your body style?

Is this a trunion trany ? I mean is it the original 4 sp ?
Are you sure its not an O.D. like YR suggested ?

I'll go look at mine in the AM and take a couple of pictures and see what we can see. I do have th Super Shifter III but they are close enough.

kinda what I expected. Straight, oversize rods, shifter sitting up higher, and shorter handle. They were intended for hard(bang) shifting, drag strip use. The idea behind the rods was less deflection.
So did they make a version to fit 66 a-body?

I know this is a real old thread but the answer is the Super Shifter was designed solely with fitment to the transmission and not to any particular car. It sits higher that the Competition PLUS and Hurst cautions you in the installation instructions that there is likely to be some interference with floors, humps or transmission mounts so be prepared to do a little custom tailoring.
I would like to hear from anyone who has experience using one on the street. Does it make life better or is it another annoying hindrance to joy, love and happiness?

done several in 67-76 A bodies. This one is in Butch Leals street Duster. Fabbed a 1/2" thick aluminum bracket to raise the shifter approx. 1" and run the reverse rod OVER the trans cross member. Not a Hurst Super Shifter but Hurst Competition Plus with the re-enforced rods (same / same).....fits like a glove (OJ Simpson)

Hey HemiDenny,
I am just starting the shifter linkage today, so pretty great Ogre Backwash dug up this thread!

Did you make those rods? The rods that came with the car (67 barracuda) do not line up great. I could do a heat n bend to coax them into position, but when I went to a hurst competition the shifter linkage holes are bigger and require those insert things. So if Im going through the trouble Im open to possibility of getting more stout rods. Any hints appreciated, my reverse rod wants to go under the crossmember but still is a mile away from where I need it to go. I like the routing of yours.

EDIT: Happy to invest in your setup if you are making them, but I am running a console so that 'riser' spacer' may put a wrench in that.

This is excellent information. Thank you for putting it up.

The arms I pick up at swap meets and e-bay but could easily add a sleeve to a Hurst standard straight arm / rod. The adapter could possibly be an off the shelf item but just not the demand to fabricate the minimum (12) and impossible to recoup the expense / time involved to sell one-offs.

is there a number on that stock looking reverse arm?

Thanks for the info! Love your builds!

I bought the reverse arm from Shifter Doctor. Of course, it was straight until I attacked it with my little arbor press and a round socket. Not sure of the part number, but they have several lengths of straight arms to choose from. Just get out your tape measure.

looking thru their site, I would not be surprised if the had an adapter to raise the shifter.

Thanks Denny,
I'm getting back to this part of the car today. Im thinking of using rod ends if i have enough room at the shifter fingers/levers. I can't utilize the riser as the shifter is quite close to the bottom of the console already.... I'll have to measure. It would be super dope to run straight rods.

Sorry for the hijack @Sean b. I got caught up in the moment...

Note that the Street Super Shifter is not the same as the Super Shifter. Both have straight shift rods, but the original Super Shifter rods are about twice as thick as the Street Super Shifter rods. Neither mount in the same place as the Competition Plus, and so they use a different adapter. In my case, I had to trim the chrome shift plate to clear the shift box. Otherwise, it all bolted in w/o any problem.

I put my Super shifter in my 65 Barracuda in the early seventies. My original shift box broke internally, and the Super Bee shifter I got out of a junk yard for $10 was worn out sloppy and would skin my knuckles on the 2-3 shift. Also was bad about hanging up on the 2-3 shift.

Super shifter was great after that. Had a much shorter handle so shifter travel was quite a bit less, albeit also took more muscle (Mom didn't like it). Couldn't use my original shift handle as it was angled wrong and would just about sit on the floor in fourth gear.

Eventually, the Super Shifter shift box crapped out too (my 65 Barracuda has more than 300,000 miles on it), so it got replaced by a simple Competition Plus box that you didn't have to push down to get reverse. That box bolted up to the Super Shifter adapter, and the beefy Super Shifter rods hooked to the Competition Plus box. (As an aside, I ordered a Super Shifter for my old slant six four speed 65 Valiant; it was the street version, with the wimpier rods, still worked very well.)

One day I was in Barnett Automotive in Atlanta, and saw a Hurst shift handle hanging on the wall that looked like it was curved in just the right place to work with my Super Shifter. And it was (sometimes I get lucky). So that's what I have now, original beefy Super Shifter rods, Competition Plus shift box bolted to the Super Shifter adapter, Hurst shift handle of unknown application. Black ball that looks almost like my original 65 shift ball, trimmed original 65 shift plate, homemade leather boot.

Looks like I am going to make a Hemi Denny spacer. The shift rods line up directly with the floor board support. I have a console but I think I can get 3/4" higher and 1/2" towards the driver spacer to at least get a more direct route to those levers. Or cut and plate the support. I am afraid to just buy the rods that are supposed to fit, because I dont have faith that they will. Does this look right to ya'll? 1967 barracuda A833 Hurst competition plus shifter.
