I don't know why it seems I get all the strange problems, I have asked 8 mechanics whom I rely on for expertise and knowledge and they are all scratching their head on this one.

I will start from a dead stop, bring it up to 10 mph, let off the gas, then slow back down. I can either hit the brakes or not, doesn't seem to matter. But what it seems like to me, and I could be wrong, is that when the engine stops pushing the car and the car starts pushing the engine, I either hear a pop, ding, or boing noise, and sometimes, like 2 out of 6 times it won't make any noise. What the hell is that?

If you have any questions, ask away. This one is really got me wondering. I have never heard a noise like this.

Thanks

pop, ding ,boing?wow, does it do it going faster going 10 mph? are you drinking again?lol, sorry, i know what a popping sound is,but the ding and boing, hhhhmmmm

My guess is a dry u-joint.
Maybe a leafspring, it's perch, or a bushing.
Unless the driveshaft is getting into the park-brake cable, but that's more like a ting-ting-ting.

But if it involves the brakes, then adjust the rear brakes up tighter. If it persists then remove the drums and go have a look at the backing plates.

That's all I got

LOL, not drinking...

No psychedelic mushrooms either, lol!!!

It only makes the noise one time when I slow down, then it doesn't do it until I speed up to about 10-12 mph, then slow down again, very strange. It is either the pop, or the ding, or the boing noise. Like when you have a 3/8" tall by about 1/8" wide tab of sheet metal and you flick it, kind of noise, like doe-ing. I know I am crazy, but I'm not hallucinating, I captured the noise on my phone and took it to an expert who was stumped. I plan on swapping out the drive shaft anyway, because it is stock and I need a much stronger one. It will handle 700-800 hp, the new one. If it still makes the noise, I have no idea what to do, no one seems to know.

Thanks.

The U-Joints are new. Could they be dry or maybe a needle bearing not seated right?

What kind of car is it? What engine? What transmission? I assume it's an A body. Have you had the driveshaft out and looked and the splines? It maybe sticking on the output shaft. It is too long or too short? Is it aluminum? Shooting in the dark with not much info.

Yea, before driving any more and risking more damage and getting stuck somewhere, I'd pull the driveshaft and start checking the u-joints by hand. Checking the yoke & trans slip-spline fit/play wouldn't hurt while your at it. But I'm going with the u-joints also. Check the u-joint c-clips & make sure they are all 'clipped in" correctly.

Yes ^^^
Then grab the pinion yoke by hand, with the rear wheels off the ground and roll it over by hand to see if you can feel anthing odd in the reat end bearings or gear sets.

From the sounds of your description possibly cold be the ring gear moving on the differential housing. Bolts just starting to loosen up from hard use and working that ring gear back and forth under acceleration and deceleration.

Possible worn Sure-Grip and or springs.

What does it sound like when you run it with the wheels up off the ground? Does it make the same noises when accelerating and decelerating?

It's a 70 Duster, 408/727 ton of work just done to it 6 mo ago. New engine, new trans, new 8.75, rear brakes were gone through. But the people who put it together were apparently not all they said they were, found multiple mistakes, bad ones too. They replaced the drive shaft but didn't tell me, God only knows what it is out of. New U-Joints though. It does seem like a U-Joint problem, needle bearing missing or not lubricated. I am going to have it towed to a drive shaft specialty shop to have them custom build a shaft for it, 1350 U-Joints. Right now the shaft is steel, but rusted, even the slip part of the slip yoke is rusted. There "is" 3" or so of slip yoke showing, which I think is too much, but if that is the case I may have fried the splines on the trans shaft. I'm hoping that's not it.

Just got the center section from Dr Diff, online. Brand new race 8.75. I can jack the back up and look for play or noise this coming week. Hoping its a U-Joint.

Towing it to a drive shaft place for a new custom drive shaft probably next week if possible. Not driving it.

Maybe exhaust system mounted too rigidly, or, hitting something when the drivetrain shifts?

That could very well be it, the exhaust is very stiff. Could be binding, then not, then shift and make a different noise! I will definitely look into this!

Thanks
