Is powdercoat an option for headers ??

-
My powder coater does ceramic but it’s not the same thing as “powder coating “.

I haven’t put any exhaust heat to my headers that have been ceramic coated yet. The ceramic that the powder coater does isn’t like the process that Jet Hot Coatings or say, TTi , does. Whereas the high dollar stuff looks shiny for a long time and holds its color the ceramic that powder coating shops apply will color fade or get chalky but at least they won’t rust. So, it’s better than nothing and it’s a cheaper solution.

Ceramic spray paint works great, just make sure you fire those headers up after you paint them to cure it. I did mine in white and 2 years later I took them out and when I chipped the paint off it was clean silver and it was hard to chip it off.

I thought about blowing a leaf blower past the collector (Venturi) and spraying an aerosol ceramic spray into the primaries because the powder coater could not get his ceramic very far into the tubes. Good to know it works well.

I had the pipe on my Maico dirtbike powdercoated and its doing fine .

Then I'd say your exhaust gas temperatures are held to below say 375 degrees. Or there is more to the story. Double walled? It's not what you think it was they used? Electric motorbike with a redneck exhaust pipe. Something.

Yes! The headers on my Coronet were powder coated matte black over five years ago and still look great.

Probably same deal I have. Not powder coat but a ceramic they apply like powder coat . Can’t be powder coat. It would have smelled like burning plastic and wouldn’t look good after it melted. Your regular powder coat won’t live on headers. The ceramic stuff powder coater use is slightly less durable than things like Jet Hot and it doesn’t come in shiny chrome finishes.

all american powdercoating in lutz , headers get the ceramic not the powdercoat

There are powder coatings that are more heat resistant than others . My friend owns a powder coating biz and we restore dirtbikes. He has done many pipes without an issue .
It is possible that a hot V8 may produce more heat but we race these bikes in MX .

Are you sure they were powder coated and not sprayed with a ceramic coating and then heat cured. I do a lot of powder coating. I did some headers and exhaust manifolds about 15 years ago with some powder that was supposed to be specifically for headers and withstand 1000 degrees (or something like that). I wound up refunding the money to each customer because the powder failed. A few years ago I found some ceramic paint that works really well. I sand blast the part in my blasting cabinet and cure it for a while to give it an initial cure. Then when the part is installed, the manufacturer's recommendation is to run at operating temperature for 20 minutes. If you did not have access to a powder coating oven for an initial cure, the guy I talked to from the paint company said you could do the entire cure on the car. It seems to work really well. The paint isn't cheap, but it works pretty well. I have not had a customer complain yet. I wonder what @CudaChick1968 has to say. I bet she doesn't powder coat headers or exhaust manifolds.

According to Mike the high temp powder coats will work but they are not thermal barriers . I questioned him on this when we did the pipe for my Maico .

Probably cheaper to buy ceramic coated headers than buying them un coated and having them done...

It's an option, just not a very good one.

I called my local powder coat shop about ceramic coating my headers and it was outrageous how much they wanted...

That’s exactly what I was afraid of. I’ve found some coating that has good reviews for much less.
