Hi guys! Trying to decode VIN and/or fender tag to confirm my 64 Cuda originally had a V8. Tried online decoders with minimal success and the old 'go to' decoder is now $50. I really only want to confirm engine size. Any thoughts appreciated! Also included fender tag below.
VIN V855108644 decodes as follows:
Description Interpretation Code
Make/Model/Engine:
Plymouth Barracuda, Valiant V
Model/Series: Barracuda, Taxi 8
Year: 1965 5
Assembly Plant: Los Angeles, CA 5
Sequence Number : 108644 108644

Im not familiar with the early fender tags but V usually means Plymouth and the second should be a letter designating the price class. This may not be valid for pre 70 tags. Google around and look for a vin decoder.

Thanks MoparMike! The PDF you shared is perfect and I appreciate it. Yes, looks like 273.

If I remember right about the AB numbers, 30 is a 273 2 barrel, 31 is a 273 Commando, and 32 is a 273 Formulas S with Commando motor.

Nope, it's more confusing than that. 31 can be either two or four barrel depending on the year. '65 it's a four barrel, '66 it's a two barrel. 32 is four barrel in '66. Formula S is a different code down that line. '64 only had one 273 available and that was 30.

How the heck do you know all this, LOL! Thank you for sharing!

Galen Govier's option code and part number books are interesting and invaluable. You can buy them through many Mopar parts sellers.

In 64 30 under AB is 273 2 barrel. In 1965 30 under AB is 273 2 barrel and 31 is 4 barrel. In 66 31 is 273 2 barrel and 32 4 barrel.

Anyone try the early Valiant/Barracuda site lately? Good info was also there...
