Hey guys I'm looking for a small lighter 1 wire alternator, I'm interested in how many amps you guys use or what's necessary for a big block a-body.
If you're like me I'm looking for another cars instead of a expensive aftermarket, so if that's something you've found please let me know.
Thank you.

Never ran another manufactures alternator but I do run Jones Racing alternators and they are badass and charge a pile at idle which most other "race" type alternators don't do very well.

I do have a softball sized Denso racing alternator that I don't where I bought it years back and it is small and lighter than the Jones but it didn't charge enough at idle to keep the battery charged up with everything else that the car was pulling from the battery and had issues getting car to crank over fast enough at times and hooking it up after each round to a dedicated charger wasn't something I really wanted to do so going the route of a much better alternator worked best for me and zero issues since.

I use the Mopar 100amp 1 wire on mine. Its the black powdercoated model. Uses a 69 case.

We installed a 1 wire 1991 Toyota Four Runner 2.4 L alternator V belt pulley 60 amp on a Super Comp car over 10 years ago. Does the job to this day.Even with all the electronics that have been added over the years.

I run the same on my 500 Hardtop you can get higher amp units as well

I run the same alternator on both of my cars, and the daughters car, they work great.

Thanks guys for all the replies. I'm not sure what I'll do yet.

I'm just askin, so don't kill the messenger, but what's wrong with the factory Chrysler alternator? They're pretty compact and lasted fifty plus years.

For my application I wanted to eliminate the engine compartment wiring so that was one of the reasons I went with a 1 wire alternator and also the factory ones don't produce enough at idle for the added needs of a race car or even a good street/strip car in my opinion and is just one of the many many things that need to be upgraded when you take one of these cars to that type level.

Powermaster 75191 Alternator, Chrysler, 95 Amp, 1-Wire

I can't speak much on that because for one I run the Jones Racing alternators and they charge at idle more than my cars needs which is where the factory ones and even some of the aftermarket ones don't do well enough. Also what does a factory Chrysler alternator charge at idle in comparison to the modified version from Powermaster? Still don't want the additional wiring on this particular car, other cars yes I have them looking bone stock and the factory alternator is adequate because it doesn't have the added things my modified cars have.

Just a warning......

If you have the factory "amp" gauge in the dash, and you run a high amp alt.........the pins in the bolk connector, at the fire wall can not handle the amperage.
It will cause lots of grief down the road. eliminate the amp gauge and wiring(go to a volt meter) or make a much, Bigger Connection, through the fire wall, to the amp gauge and back out.
Just some food for thought.

I had a local, old timer, build my alt into a 50 amp 3 wire alt that will still charge at 500 rpm.
Don't have a clue what he did, but it works.
Unfortunate his shop is closed now. He even rebuild my 91 Cummins starter for 30 bucks!!!!!!!

Jones for the win, remember OPs objective and application. In a race car we do a lot of idling on occasion, even tho we try not to. With all of the assorted tech type stuff the car needs to stage putting out a good charge at idle can really make a difference. Lots of great suggestions here but Jones for the win, just my opinion.

Yup....I been through a few different ones that weren't up to the task and then finally Jones solved all the problems......Thanks for reiterating what I have been repeating like 8 times already, LOL

Also to add to this as it is relevant I use Odyssey batteries and have never ever once had a battery and or charging problem since switching to this combo.......IT WORKS

Maybe on their website or by calling them but no specs on what it will charge at idle, it only shows max charging amps. I suspect this alternator would be inadequate for most race cars.

i have this single wire alt on my street /strip Dart. Works perfectly.
Went couple years without ever charging my battery, even going rounds and running electric fan and waterpump between rounds. It gets it done at idle, and above. Nice piece. Tidy in engine compartment
