The $5,800.00 mistake

-
This "Cornshuckers" opinion...

If it cost $5800 to repaint the door and clear the car, then the original paint job must have cost $50k.

Your body shop is way overpriced.

That scratch could be made totally unnoticeable.

I dont care how good your body shop is. If they repaint part of the car, it will be more noticeable than repairing that scratch. When you figure in new batches of base coat and color coat (or the age difference in any left over paint), atmospheric conditions, gun settings, mixing of the flake, etc. There is no way they can guarantee that the spraying of the base coat and color cost will be exactly the same thickness and consistency as the original. Also, the angle of spray and continuity will be different, no matter what, and the lay of the metalflake will be different as well. There will always be an angle, at which you will see a difference, and I'm willing to bet that difference will be much more noticeable than the repaired scratch, especially in its location. The real problem here, is that you know that scratch is there, and you wont be happy with a repair. But repainting part of the car is just a bigger repair, and I bet you wont be happy with that either, "Cause you'll know it's there!"

To the insurance company, a claim is a claim, Doesn't matter if its a fender bender or you drive a monster truck through a Mercedes showroom. Like missing a day of school: just a check mark in box or a number in a column.

You don't "Deserve" a claim because you've paid for 30 years and never had one.

You seem to have the attitude, not the others on here.

Anyone who has an opinion different than yours is either a hater, or obviously inferior to you. Means you are either arrogant, or a liberal. Oops, same thing, sorry.

Since I like to end on a positive note: Nice car.

What would I do? A needle brush and touch up paint.... I don't even like the color.

maybe we should start charging... like 50 cents a pop... get a few thousand in here..that would be a good little chunk. :-D

which could also pay for the repaint! I joke.

Does seem high...but they are doing it right for you!
But I will say this...Do whatever lets you sleep at night.

I have two older mopars. One a show car 1971 Duster...As much as I love it...I hate it for that too...She's to damn pretty to drive around and be afraid of "what I might do" to her.

the other is a 66 Barracuda...smokes like hell...runs great...has door dings, paint fades right after waxing...little 13" wheels... foam chips falling out from under the seat...absolutely love to drive her...anywhere.

Love your RAT too...

Aloha!

rofl, best thread i've read in awhile. I don't get the point of a car if you're afraid to drive it.

Entertaining read, thats for sure!

Consensus seems to be that this should not require a $5800 repair, but it's moparman's call and he's the one who has to be satisfied in the end. Myself, I'd be concerned about the potential for damage to the rest of the car during this process. How often do you hear about something like this where the clear reacts in some unforseen way and ruins the entire paint job? Moparman, if you're still reading this thread, I'd reconsider the method. I know it's not about money, trailer queens, cornshucking, or whatever. You've got a car to be proud of and a paint job to be proud of. I believe it is a fact that the scratch could be repaired without reclearing the entire car and nobody, including yourself and show judges would be able to detect the repair.

As I read your reply, you led me perfectly to the same conclusion, a split second before I read you statement in bold above. LOL!

Phillips 66 gasoline was named in order to brag about its octane rating back when 66 octane was a really high rating. Then after all the gasoline brands got octane ratings higher than 66, Phillips was stuck with the name because it was too late to lose the brand recognition.

Changed My Mind.....bring the car the paint and the cash if you dont like it it's on me if you do like it you'll still have change for a week long vacation for you and the family in sunny florida

I do think I'd take away any sharp objects from you pal! ( At least for awhile)

I have had candy colors touched up by a good body guy and no one, not even me can tell where they repaired it. Regardless I think if you are going to be anal about the condition of your car I would recommend quit driving it down the gravel road. Cars that you are afraid to drive are no fun in my opinion. While were on the subject, I want the 3 minutes of my life back for making me watch the bad video of the hood scoops driving down a dirt road. By the way if its a 100 point (what judging criteria) show car, why would you set your camera on the dash and move it around? You know that will scratch it. Okay rant over.

'Cause he is a re-tard.

i think there should be ANAL awards on this website and the prize could include a link to a corvette website. I already know who id vote for.

Nice car ,just fix it. If we think back about a car we had or have the best memories are the ones we have sitting behind the wheel.Speaking of memories, did anyone ever date in a bucket seat 4spd a-body?

FishyPete.............

It's more fun in a 1972 SCCA MG Midget race car. The roll cage hikes up the
Degree Of Difficulty substancially !!

Don't ask me how I know of this fact.

Holy Crap!!! Please make this beat-to-death thread go away! As they say in the Army, "LOCK IT UP!!!!"
