Hey, sorry I missed this for so long. I loved my Dart, I sold it last Fall. I was in a crash in my Honda S2000, an elderly person pulled right out in front of me and I totaled my car. Bad enough in the Honda, by luck I wasn't driving the Dart. I decided to focus on my 64 Airstream and let...

trickle charger for cars that sit/Odyssey charger

Hey, thanks for all this. We ended up with the battery Tender, which is working well.. even kind of topping up the battery when the alt. won't. It's an Alfa, what can I say. So now we're looking at one for a jeep that sits for 6 months every year unused at a summer cabin. I'm not comfortable...

trickle charger for cars that sit/Odyssey charger

hey- does anyone have experience with trickle chargers to keep up batteries in cars that aren't used often? My father in law is looking for one and found one on line, but I like to get some word of mouth recomendations for stuff like this. I did see one mentioned in another thread here, an...

where to get a replacement 2bbl

hey, how much do you want for it? I found a place through a guy who is a friend of a friend, the guy being a machinist who has rebuilt engines for 50 years, and I'm taking it down on, yikes, tomorrow. I'm interested, being rural it helps to have spares. Peter

where to get a replacement 2bbl

so, do you know anyone who rebuilds them? I had THIS one rebuilt by a guy in Santa Rosa, who was supposed to knowledgeable but the thing dumps gas out of the top tube all the time, smokes and has other problems. This isn't the original, but a later replacement of the same type.

    carburetor riddle

I've rebuilt and had the original two barrel carb put back on my '68 318, but there are issues I'm trying to sort out. Cold starting, I have to just depress the gas til I hear the butterfly open in the carb and the choke set, rather than flooring it. If I floor it, it floods and won't start...

    kickdown linkage

Did get the Bouchillion kit, had it installed and adjusted it myself. Now the thing works great, downshifts, holds gears longer under acceleration. I love how simple these cars are. The water in the oil was condensation.

    white gunk on dipstick

The oil is being changed tomorrow. There has been no change to the water in the radiator, no change in level and no gunk in there. I don't know what was done to the engine, other than it was rebuilt about 30k ago. I'll keep you posted. Thanks Peter

    white gunk on dipstick

yes, I know, you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. It appears to be condensation, but I'm keeping my eyes on it. Fortunately, the monkeys didn't do a lot, it's pretty original and unmolested. I'm just cleaning up after them. Peter

    Smart Cars?

The ones that were imported by small importers like Zap in Santa Rosa CA, and were sold for 30k, were the same old Smart, the first version, and USED ONES. They were so pricey because there were federalized one at time. When MB etc decided to officially import them, last year, the market for...

    Westside German Shepherd Rescue!

redfastback: thanks for taking care of the Pits! We've had Alice for 15 years now, pit/yellow lab mix, and I'd get another in a heartbeat. She came from the Oakland SPCA. We also rescued a Pit mix who I think had been a bait dog- deep bite wounds on her neck and hind quarters- when she...

    Smart Cars?

I lived in Switzerland when they were introduced- I thought they looked kind of jouncy and unstable. Friends have them and love them. There is an amazing amount of room inside, for people. Kind of a cool city car, would be great in SF or other urban areas where you don't move fast and there...

    white gunk on dipstick

Thanks, you guys are a huge help. Okay: from the Sea Ranch to the DMV in Fort Bragg at 45-50 mph tops. Really really twisty; the section called Mal Paso is a test of drum brakes and tire adhesion. Temp 45-50 degrees and drizzly. The car has been outside. It doesn't run hot. The gunk is...

    white gunk on dipstick

I know the white gunk on the dipstick is water, and I'm hoping it's condensation. There is no oil or sheen on the coolant, no steam, but a little water on the dipstick. Maybe it's condensation? I found it after driving 150 mi. The intake manifold was replaced by the PO, and a lot of the...

Help!! Lots of condensation in dipstick ect!

Hey, I just found this too. No loss of water in the radiator, no steam, just a little crud on the dipstick. Car had sat for 10 days, but drove it 150 miles yesterday. If it was the head gasket, wouldn't I see the other stuff, steam out the tail pipe and oily coolant in the rad? Peter

    kickdown linkage

there is no kick down linkage from the carb to the bellcrank that leads to the transmission. I saw a kit from Bouchillion Performance, and the instructions were great for explaining what should be there and how it works. Just found coolant in my oil, so I have worse things to deal with at the...

    kickdown linkage

I'm new to this: the kickdown linkage has something to do with the regular upshifting of the trans. I posted elsewhere, but the PO put a Holley 4bbl on my '68 318, and it shifts up hard unless it's under moderate throttle, and won't shift to 3rd until it hits 30mph, again hard unless under...

    looking for kickdown linkage

Hey- the PO put a Holley 4bbl on my 318 ('68 Dart) and neglected to put the kickdown link from the carb to the pivot mechanism mounted at the back of the intake manifold. It's still connected from that pivot thing to the transmission. Any ideas (or anyone with one lying around they want to...
