    742 case

You would have less work to keep the pinions and gears to their respective cases as the pinions are set to case when dialed in and assembled. You can take the sure grip out of ring gear and swap it to the 3.23 ring gear. Then you only have to set backlash of the ring gear to pinion. That is...

    3:55 gears to 323 gears

If you have to buy new gears or carrier, you could just go with taller tie. A 28" diam tire like 245/70R15 has same width and would reduce 200 rpm at cruise.

    torque specs

I tried to torque converter to flex plate once to 200 in-lb IIRC. Stripped out 2 threads in convertor; so put on red loctite until could fix it 4 yrs later when trany out. Since then use blue loctite and just titen by feel with short 1/2" wrench.

    8&3/4 489 Cone Style Mod

I read some thread said the shims were stock ford parts, but don't have number. I found some .060 stainless ones in Mac's Hardware, in the yellow specialty part drawers.

Thanks all. The anti-seize or moly looks like best option.

Help, need info on 833 mounting.

After too many years, am putting 833 back onto rebuilt 340 engine. What lube to put on clutch splines & pilot bush. I sprayed them with Dry Graphite Film and don't want too much grease to fling on disc. Also which side does long part of spline hub go toward? Thanks for help.

    This ain’t gonna work

If you are going to get new one, may as well get an SFI spec flex plate. B&M or others from mancini, jegs, summit.

    Long Term Transmission Plan...

The GearVendor OD is an OD unit that replaces the tail shaft housing on your existing auto trans. It is explained in their site; Gear Vendors under/overdrive, Electronics & Installation Notes.. I have never had one, but most reviews are positive.

Tranny men please read my torquenverter

You could just check end play of crank to determine if main bearing thrust is worn. Do that before pulling pan.

    8.25 rear pros

Sorry, I stand corrected. I had only seen 8.75, 9.25, and Dana 60 axles.

    8.25 rear pros

Now that you say it is going in a full size pickup, the cons have another point. If you ever want to tow or haul heavy loads with that truck, the axle bearings are not sized for those loads. Sure you may get by, but they would fail if pushed. There is reason Dodge never put them in full size...

    8.25 limited slip, Rebuildable?

Thanks you guys for posting. I guess I will just have to tear apart to see what's in there. From Rock Auto, they list a clutch type TracLoc for 88 Dakota. I corrected my post to Dakota pickup instead of Durango. (Brain Fart)

Thanks MoparMike. I heard something about that long time ago. Do you know if that from Durango would be suregrip.

    8.25 limited slip, Rebuildable?

Hey All. I need some help on what I have for limited slip in my 8.25 differential since it is slipping. I have 74 Duster that has 8.25 diff rear end that I had newer ring & pinion installed. I bought a 3.55 R&P with limited slip here on FABO in 2008. The numbers from ring gear: 2852943 -...

Sure grip and gear install 8.25

You can get rebuild kit for 8.25 from Rockauto.com, Randy's Ring&Pinion, Dr. Diff, and even local parts stores. But wait until you tear it down because there are two different bearing sizes for carrier. Make sure which ones you have before ordering. Get service manual to see what tools you...

They are hoping for a miracle?

After you have backed off the seven turns, hold screw with Allen wrench and tighten lock nut with box end wrench to approximate torque. Mark screw to see if it moves after the torque wrench has done it's job. To get close on torque, test force required on the box wrench to reach 30 lb-ft.

    TF band adjust advice

Got it done today. Thanks for the input. I used a5/16 wrench & put an Allen wrench in the box end then torque wrench on Allen hex. Had to adjust torque down because of added length of wrench (72 down to 50 in-lb). Worked OK. Didn't have room on outer adjuster cause of headers, so had to use...

    TF band adjust advice

I'm going to change oil on TF 727 behind 408 stroker and will adjust bands too. What size is the square head of adjusting bolts?. I got procedure from 1970 FSM. Is there any modifications to that for a street & mostly strip Duster? Appreciate your help.

couple questions i should have asked before hand

There are two sizes of carrier brngs. Get the cone off the carrier shaft and measure that shaft OD. Record that and ID of case bore, then talk to good parts store for proper brng set. Dr Diff could answer your questions and supply bearings too.

I took my 727 out for a good time at the drag strip. I didn't abuse it and it was good to me. Went 3 rounds & had blast.

    Anyone using shift-r-gate?

I am using the Duncan "Shift-r-gate" on my duster w 727 with standard pattern. It works great doesn't hang or miss shift. Only thing is you have to hold shifter button down when making a fast 2 to 3 shift or it will skip to N. At start of season of drag racing, I do some dry runs w engine off...

    904 behind a 5.9 magnum engine

I know that a 904 can be built with HD clutches and bands that will live with over 450 hp. The stock class racers run 904 because less rotating weight and friction loss.

Best way to remove my trans?

I pulled trans this winter from my duster. Getting bellhousing bolts out was easy but I was dreading putting them in. I bent the lip of the firewall to floor joint flat so that would give me more clearance. That helped a lot in putting the bolts back in bellhousing. It was work for a fat...

    "clunk" going into reverse

Get under it with trans in N and wheels chocked or park brakes set tight. Use your hands to twist the driveshaft back and forth starting at front and work back to rear end. See if there is any difference in slack. Then put trans in park and see if trans yoke spline has slop. You should be...

    8 1/4 question

I seem to recall that some diff cases with 2.76 gears were a little different and I don't know if that was gear carrier or that sure-grip wouldn't fit. Other than that 3.23 and lower ratios work from any 8.25. Dodge Dakota trucks often had them and some had limited slip. I put limited slip...

    HD U-Joint won't fit

I bought a set of Spicer 5-789X u-joints for my duster to replace the weaker greasable joints. I called Dana/Spicer for recommendation of strongest 7260 u-joint and they said it was the Spicer 5-789X which is cold forged and not cross drilled. So it is not greasable. Anyway the cross would...

    727 transmission lines...

When you say a little too tight, by how much. Is it just too snug or off by 1/4 inch. On my 727 into an original 904 car, it was hard to line up pins and outer part was ovaled a bit. Had to fiddle with it but it finally went on.

    Cherokee 8.25 to 64 Dart?

If you're wanting some extra wheel/tire room, you can get offset spring hangers front & rear from Mopar Performance and Mancini. That will give you another 1/2" per side. But do that before you weld the perches on the axle.
