    318 Carb Size Question

Mines a 318LA with stock small valve j heads. 340 spec cam (not sure which one though it was free!), long tube headers 2 1/2 inch exhaust. torker 2 manifold eddy 600 carb. Pulls to 6k. When I had just glasspacks off the headers to turndowns (purple hornie style) it pulled to 6200 but had a...

    click...click...click... DAMMIT!

The way you describe sounds just like a bad starter solenoid. Grab a modern starter for sure! I got a used one for 30 bucks since at the time I really couldn't afford to spend 130 on a new one made by a reputable brand name. Works like a hot damn! those old style ones are only good for boat...

    Opinions on 318 Needed

Its worth it if the motor spins for sure. Keep in mind 68 won't have hardened valve seats though. If it spun by hand id put a little oil in each cylinder prime the oil system and start it on the ground. Then you will know what you have before you mess with it too much.

    Turbo small block

I think the LA block is good to about 600, I don't know if the magnum block is weaker or not. Don't know much about the new hemi I can't afford to tinker with one. I rebuilt my 318 and threw 360 heads on it which flow better but lower compression. I am hoping to throw some boost at it when I...

    engine noise

Did you by some chance get the wrong header gasket? I think 318 and 360 ones make a difference. I also have a non mopar, honestly its a total bastard car its not faithful to any makes. Anyway it was a custom motor swap so we modded some headers to make it work in the new chassis. I looked for...

Best Way to Seal Right Angle Oil Filter Adapter

I have had nothing but bad luck with the mopar performance oil adapter seals. When I ordered a felpro gasket set for my engine it came with the oil filter adapter gaskets they were real nice gaskets and thicker than the old ones, the big ring even was a slight interference fit so you didn't have...

    318 build!!!

I say take it apart first then see what is wrong with it. Yeah maybe your spot on and it spun a rod bearing and screwed the crank up pretty good. But maybe it spun it and it didn't mess it up that bad, or maybe something else was making noise. I just feel like if possible don't make any...

Cam advice for ill advised 318 combo?

I have a very similar combo. Did a re ring on a low mileage 318 block, Put on a set of small valve 360 heads I had on the shelf, 340 spec camshaft, torker 340 intake, eddy 600cfm carb, headers w/ 2 1/2" x pipe exhaust. Then I have a 833 od, 3.23 gears and 275/60/15 tires. It roasts the tires...

    Best plugs/plug wires/cap/rotor brands for a 318 4bbl tune-up?

I ran the ngk plugs, they worked well but the tops snapped off really easily. I put a piece of hose over the top to try and get it started in the one hole that is hard with headers. top snapped right off and I was being very carefull. Later another one snapped off just from driving. I switched...

thoughts and advice for a newbie to drag racing?

The engine you have should be pretty fast as it is. You might want to screw around with your timing a bit, and light weight advance springs in the distributor if you don't have them already. Then get a sure grip in there, with some nice gears if possible, probably 3.50 or 3.73 if you want to...

    Metal Intake Manifold Gasket

The metal ones only work on 318 heads. I found that one out the hard way :banghead: There could probably be some corrosion after a long time. If you change intakes often not a big deal. If its going to be on there for a long time I might get a different gasket to be on the safe side.

    cleaning internal motor parts?

Tear it down. If you want to check the rod bearings without popping them off you can wiggle them and see how much play they have. They will have side to side play don't worry about that. But they should not have much play up and down. Pretty much just wiggle them all by hand and if one has a...

    New build

If your shortblock is in real good shape and just needs a quick re ring and bearing with no machine work, I would get a set of 302 heads. If you get pistons then you need to balance the rotating assembly, you might need to bore the block if they don't offer a stock sized piston. The machine work...

    Megasquirt MS3 EFI - 360LA

I had a DIYPNP unit on my toyota. I assembled everything myself. If I had to do it all again I would have just got an assembled unit. It worked very well though. You can do almost anything with megasquirt. It is a bit hard to figure everything out. If your not too great with computers or...

Daily Driver Engine 318 vs 360, what one?

I think N/A your best bet would be to use a 360 roller block and stroke it out to 408. Custom cam grind might be a good idea for best mpgs. I think the best way to achieve your hp goals and good mpg would be a turbocharger. Get a 318 roller block, beef up the internals, again a custom ground...

    intakes & port sizes

Make sure you dont use a 318 metal intake gasket on 340/360 heads. It will make a giant vacuum leak and you wont be a happy camper. 273/318 are small port heads 360/340 are big port. If you can't tell what port size the intake is post up a link or a part number and someone here will know.

    340 camshaft?

I had this cam in a stock 318 shortblock, stock 318 heads and springs, ld4b intake 600cfm eddy, headers with 12 inch glasspacks and turndowns rite off it. It would pull to 6,000 rpm. Then when I put a 2 1/2 inch exhaust with an X pipe I gained power but it only would pull to 5,800. Then the...

    340 camshaft?

Its a fairly mild cam but still leaps and bounds better than stock. Idle is pretty smooth, plenty of vacuum for power brakes.

    318 camshaft?

318 stock bottom end and heads with a 340 cam, nice intake and headers will run pretty good for pretty cheap. You could still probably get some decent mpgs out of that combo too. If you have a big wallet go with the stroker, throw the 318 heads in the garbage and go bigger and better heads.

    75 318 Dart won't start and backfires!!!

I had pretty much this exact problem and it was my ballast resistor. The backfires were so loud when I turned the key off! I think with the low voltage the coil doesen't have enough juice to produce a good enough spark in sucession but, It stores up enough when your not cranking to make one...

    adjustable distributors?

I did some searching and it seems its a holden cap and distributor design. I wish I could run the gm style one with the huge cap but, from what I understand it doesn't fit. I wish there was more pictures of this distributor, I am curious how the mechanical advance is adjusted.
