Slow cranking and won't start 340

My 340 won't start. It also cranks very slow and gets starter hot with key on after continually attempting to crank. If I disconnect the coil or just jump it at solenoid with key off, it cranks normally. So basically for some reason when the motor is firing or attempting to fire it sounds like...

    99 problems and a Ford ain't one.

A couple of months ago I posted some issues I was having with my 340. I thought I had sorted them out by adjusting the valves. In all fairness the car tricked me. Because if I drive it, that's when it all goes to ****. It will run beautifully for about 15 minutes. I take it on the road, and it...

#1 Cylinder seems dead. Fixed problem

Thanks to all the help everyone gave me. It was the valves being out of adjustment. Apparently you really DO have to adjust solid lifters every now and then. Here's the video of her idling and pissing off my neighbor.

    #1 Cylinder seems dead.

Hi. Been a long time since I've been on. Having a bit of a problem with my 340. #1 Cylinder is staying cold. I used the water on the header trick. Definitely cold. I then checked valve adjustment. It is a Crane solid roller cam 509". The rockers were a little loose by a few thousandths, but...

    Still modifying...

In the ongoing quest to make my 340 fast, I have yet ran into another issue. I recently scored a Crane roller cam and solid rollers on eBay for $400. However, the price I am now paying is in clearance issues. The keeper on the lifters catch on the rib support above the lifter bore. Is this...

    possible piston to head contact.

In my ongoing quest to win the battle against my pro comp heads, they have thrown a new curveball at me. I recently pulled them off my '72 block 340 to get new springs installed for the new Comp Cams roller cam. Upon delivering them to the machine shop my machinist pointed out that there were...

Goodbye Crane Flat Tappet. I hardly knew ye.

Sometime ago I switched to the procomp head, intake and, carb package. Up until that point I was running just an Edelbrock I Performer, Eddy carb, and regular old X-heads. Ever since 2007 I have had the same Crane Hydraulic flat-tappet cam in there. Never a single problem. When I changed to the...

Why is oil coming out of these?

Oil is shooting out of here. When the car is running my motor is shooting oil out of these damn little plugs in the intake. Why would it do that? The worse part is these plugs aren't coming out because they are pressed in.

    Oil pooling

Oil is pooling at the rear of my heads and eventually starts seeping out of the valve covers. Never did this before my head swap. Ever since I swapped to the pro comp heads, the oil stays in the back and pools until it starts leaking out above the spark plugs. When the valve cover is removed I...

    Pro Comp heads are installed.

I got the pro comp heads and intake, carb, and rockers installed on my 340... finally. The only problem I ran into was that the rockers didn't clear the valve springs. At all. I had to remove a lot of material from them. Which required removing the entire rockers and shafts multiple times to...

    Procomp heads passed inspection

Went to my local machine shop and got my new procomp heads checked out. The machinist checked spring pressure, valve seats, and dissassembled and reassembled everything. He said everything looked great. He offered some porting and polishing but he said that for the price I probably wouldn't want...

    Speedmaster parts?

Has anyone ever tried Speedmaster parts? I am looking at different alluminum heads for my car. What do y'all think? My 340 is .040 over with X heads. I can also trade my 340 for a complete 383 which is what my Barracuda originally had.

    Oil pump driveshaft bushing replacement

It looks like I will need to replace my oil pump driveshaft and bushing. I discovered my oil pump driveshaft is galled causing the distributor to wiggle around while cranking. Is it possible to remove the bushing and replace with the 340 still in the car? If not, anyone have a 12 gauge shotgun...

    The plot thickens

My 340 was recently running beautifully. The next morning it wouldn't start at all. What I thought was a bad distributor is looking more like a bad timing gear. Just for the heck of it I checked the timing and went ahead and set it at 10* before tdc. I cranked her over and nothing. So, I moved...

    Distributor intermediate shaft drive pin.

I need to check to see if my distributor intermediate drive pin is broken. I am not sure how to go about checking this aside from pulling the distributor. Please tell me I do not have to tear the motor apart to check/repair this.

    Barracuda woes part 2.

I have a 69 'Cuda that I recently installed a 340 into. I purchased one of the billet style cheapo distributors that utilizes an hei style module. Car ran great for a total of about three hours. Next day it wouldn't do anything. It has great spark and getting fuel. My friend came over and he...

    Distributor issues

I recently installed a Mallory Unilite in my 340. The motor had been in a Barracuda that was hit very hard from the rear and totaled. I did start the motor after the accident and it ran fine. It still had the electronic distributor installed. However, I have since pulled the motor and it is now...

    Dumbfounded. 340 will not start.

I recently posted a thread about this but I left out some details that may be of importance. I recently purchased a 1969 Barracuda. It is originally a factory big block 4-speed car. It now has a 340 with a 18 spline a-body 4-speed(not an easy find.) I recently installed the 340 and got the car...
