And so it begins!

This is my first restoration project. Though an engineer, I am mechanically inclined and am excited to begin! Suggestions and discussion is welcomed and greatly appreciated!

I acquired this unit in a trade last year and have finally cleared enough space in my modest garage to get it in and start working. Still need to insulate the garage though, as -40 degrees here in the winter (8 months of the year XD) is not uncommon...

1964 Plymouth Valiant Barracuda
- Originally had a 273 with a 4 speed
- I'm veeeerrrry fortunate to have almost the same car at my local junkyard! I already scavenged some of the rear quarter panel (RIP old buddy... sad to see you go!)
- I bought a 360 magnum for it and am looking for a 4 speed to put behind it (A833 preferably. I considered a tremec T56 buuuuttt maybe not for my first project...) Obviously gotta put a carb on it though! Probably mechanical fuel pump etc. as well
- I'm thinking maybe a Ford 8.8 lsd rear diff from an 95+ explorer with disk brakes (cut so it's not offset). What gearing? Is 3.55 too low for power without sacrificing too much fuel?
- front disk brake conversion? Haven't researched much about the front end yet. Air bags all around would be sweet (raise car while driving [terrible roads here], slam it for shows etc.) but I think cost is going to be a limiting factor there
- I want to try my hand at redesigning the interior, but that's on the back burner. Proposed order of operations is as follows:
1) get it running
2) bodywork, electrical, bodywork, metalworking, bodywork...
3) interior?
4) pull engine and rebuild
5) upgrade as necessary (exhaust, rims, suspension?, overhaul tranny - add OD?)

Aaaaand obligatory pics.
Yes she's rough.
But she's mine.
And she'll be pretty soon enough.
Patience, friends.

Patience.

Welcome to the site.

3.55 is a good all around gear; of course dependent upon tire size used with.

You have options available for front disc brakes; from aftermarket to '73 and later bbp disc.

Good luck with your project.

Welcome! I think you need to add Bodywork to your list of things to do.
3.55 would be a good gear. I have 3.23 and find it a bit too low, & I had 4.10 and the RPMs and noise was too much for any serious driving around. It was fun at golights though.

Welcome!

The 360 Magnum is an excellent choice of power plant, just did the swap over the winter. Check out magnumswap.com and magnummopar.com for info and parts.

Good luck!

Welcome , as an engineer you are well aware of the benefits of being organized . I suggest keeping a journal of your progress and by prioritizing your labor . Everyone has a budget . Weather it is $400 or $40,000 . This helps to keep you grounded . Everyone messes up so don't get discouraged . Keep on keepin' on . I think you are on the right path but I would either put an 8 3/4" or a 9" out back . Makes gear changes much easier . Early 'Cudas are lightweight so it should be fun . Good luck !!!!!!!!

Welcome from a fellow engineer and Barracuda owner. I think you will be happy with the 3.55. I ran a 4.30 behind my 340 for 40 years, and it was great fun around town--but it was definitely not a highway cruiser! However, had a 6-speed tranny been available way back then, that 4.30 would have been much more practical. Unless you just want the carb for visual appeal, I would think about an aftermarket injection system--easily tunable, and much more livable in your cold climate! I would have replaced my 40-year old 700 double pumper with injection on the 340 had I not decided to upgrade to a 3rd gen hemi with Hilborn injection. Good luck with that garage insulation project; I guess I am spoiled since my garage only ranges between about 65 and 78.

I think you will be happy with the 3.55 gear, that's what I run in my '65. Looks like a lot of work, good luck with it.

Just to give you an idea I run 4.10's w/ 273 Commando, 4 speed...26" tall tires, 3000rpms @ 50mph in 4th gear. About 12mpg - 14mpg ...Good luck with your resto!

Are factory welds normally this bad or has this been fixed before? And what's with the ripple in the tunnel metal?
Check out how thick the Bondo is!!

Welcome to the late 70's, early '80's fender flare era... Seriously, a nice powertrain choice... That attention to detail(and research....). will save money, here... It won't be a stock bolt together.. Best , of Luck....

After decoding the VIN, I have discovered a few things.
Firstly, it appears this was a police car?!
Secondly, it is a '65, not a '64.
Thirdly, the VIN has a couple extras digits (according to this website: 1962 through 1965 Chrysler Corporation V.I.N. system decoding ).

Also, while tearing out the interior, it appears this may have originally been an automatic, not manual as I had been told.

The 1965 code you mentioned was used for both police cars and Barracudas to the best of my knowledge. If you post the other two digits you mentioned we can probably advise you on that as well. Hope this helps!

The VIN is 'V9B 59××××××'

I also have a 1965 barracuda and the vin starts out with V9B 5
What's the B for as I can't find any info anywhere at all.

V9B 59 is Valiant, 9=8 cylinder Premium (price range) and B = 2Dr Hardtop. 5='65 and 9=Canada...digits 6=11 are your consecutive serial numbers starting from 100001
