*WARNING*

First off, any first generation Barracuda purists, this isn't a thread for you. It may go against any strong feelings you have for all that is original.

My name is Charlie, here I am the_night_rider. My introduction to Mopars began when I purchased a 1965 Barracuda from a shady local dealer. What I got was a slant-six, three on the tree slice of cool. That is after I got the car working.

It was originally sold in Washington and owned by the original owner for about 4 years. Currently I am (I believe) the 4th owner. By this time it had made its way down to Reno, NV. I bought it for about 2200 in August/September of 2007.

The car was working again by December of 2007. I drove it with no problems till about October of 2008 when the column shifter finally crapped out and would lock in almost any position. I trailered it and dropped it at my dad's shop a week later and just started tearing it down this last February.

So far the car has no interior in the main cabin. The cargo area still has carpet and will keep it because it is still in great shape. The cabin needs work. Lots. The car came with so much extra trim that I could have retrimed 2 other Barracudas!

Other than important original pieces like a radio and bezel, the car was about 92% original. The fender tag decodes as an original V-8 engine. I figure the fender isn't original or the engine was replaced during the gas crisis. Either way it isn't a big deal.

I dropped an a-833 four speed with over drive into it from a '77 Volare. I'm going to use a Hurst pistol grip shifter. I'll keep the slant six in it and just get as much power from it as I can. I found out a relative of mine has an Aussie Hemi slant six in storage somewhere. I might just use that at a later date. I haven't decided.

My front grill was cracked bad, like someone hit a few cars (or shopping carts!) so I pulled it out and am fabricating a custom Billet grill with hidden fog lamps.

About 4 months ago I traded a '67 VW Bug for my '66 Valiant Signet parts car. The thing is a rust free wonder. Im going to pull the bumpers off and replace my twisted and smashed ones. I liked the '66 bumpers because of the turn signal location.

What is great is that in and around Reno is full of obscure Mopar collectors that have plenty of parts to sell.

Me in the cabin. Nothing is around except the back seat and headliner. June-ish 2009.

I added a '69 Charger fuel cap onto the side of the Barracuda with the help of 4mulaSvaliant and his adaptors.

I have decided to paint the car Top Banana Yellow and accent it with a black hood and paint all of the chrome black as well. The car looks funny (to me) with too much chrome. Right now it is still the color Med. Poly Red. I have the original wheels with later Dart hubcaps and ring. I would like to swap over to 14 inch Rallye Wheels.

But that is where I am with my project. I am aiming to finish the car by June 2010. It sounds like I have a lot left to do, but really the hard work is done. I swapped the transmission already so it is all down hill from here. More pictures to come soon.

Hi nightrider...The 65 cudas are close to my heart as that was one of my first cars as a teen. Still would like to find another one after I'm done playing with the 67. I say make it the way you want it! Powder coated trim is one way to do it, and the aussie hemi sounds interesting, too. I dont think they "slant" like ours do...could be wrong about that, tho. Anyway, have a blast with her...i know ya will!8)

Cool! I am a purist and a restomod guy all in one. i have no problem doing either. And the 65 Barracuda Formula S is my favorite! I am currently creating a 1965 Barracuda Formula S CONVERTIBLE!!! I am about 85% finished. I will post some pictures in the next few weeks. Again COOL!

Original purist, me? .......Nawwww
Build like you feel it

Looking forward to seeing more.

Yep,follow your heart. You have to like it first and after that, well whatever.Keep us informed with your build and Pics,Pics,pics!8)

I wanted to get a valiant convertible and make into a barracuda convertible. I love the valiant convertibles with the barracuda grills!

Right now the one thing that I need for my Billet grill to work is to some how mount it around the hood latch or remove the latch entirely and just use hood pins.

The problem is, I do not want the hood to fly up and smash the windshield or kill me. What could I do? Also, I do not wish to use a Valiant grill.

This is the front of the car currently.

It has been like this for awhile now, I would like to use the same mounting points in the grill that the stock one had, but a more custom grill than the old Valiant one had. One more, dare I say, Mustang sleek. But with Mopar attitude. :dontknow:

The placement of that latch is what keeps me from being able to cut, weld, place and mount the new grill.

I just came across this photo right now searching for pictures of my Barracuda.

The story behind this was that I had originally wanted to paint my car like Dirty Mary Crazy Larry. (Classic film) Well, I was searching on Google, Custom 1965 Barracuda, or something. Well lo and behold this comes up. Now, not that I'm going to be someone who dosent want his car painted like the other few who are similar to his in the world. BUT. What was so ironic was not only the color was the same I wanted, but in the background is a poster for the Eldorado Hotel and Casino. This car is a local Barracuda living somewhere in Reno! What are the odds? Suffice to say I scrapped the idea.

I digress.

What I am going to do though is remove the side Barracuda and fish emblems and relocate one set to the back of the car just under the trunk and the other to the front grill.

My other hurdle is restoring the interior cabin.

There is a mystery floor hole I imagine was used to try to place a floor shifter. Then just mildly repaired with some crap sheet metal and screws. The floor is rust free other than the basic surface issues. Also the dash has been drilled to hell and maintains a weird shape and a lot of different scars. You can see where I mounted plumber's tape for a cd player. I will just end up making a center console that runs right up to the dash.

But this is most of the pictures I have now. I'll add more when I head down to where it is stored.

Let me know what you think or if you have any more ideas, PLEASE, any and all help would be the best!

I wanted to get a valiant convertible and make into a barracuda convertible. I love the valiant convertibles with the barracuda grills!

I am going a bit more crazy than just a grill, I will detail that a bit later. By the way, if you want a Radio delete plate to cover the OEM radio hole (since you are going underdash) let me know I have one for $20 shipped!

Naw thanks though, I got a 64 valiant/barracuda radio with bezel already, I wanna keep the period one in and make like a hideaway in the console.

But what do you have for like headlight bezels and assorted trim pieces?

Theres some parts im looking for but I forget at the moment.

Do you have any pics thus far of your project?

New photo today. Awhile back I had an itch to get some American Racing Vector wheels for the cuda. After I lined up a set I was supposed to be breaking the tires off of for a customer and snapped a quick pic, I realized that it isn't the best wheel for the body. Plus these were on a Courier truck. The wheel is a 6 bolt.

Here are a few pics of the '66 Valiant Signet that I picked up as a parts car.

The majority of the seat covers are shot, the seat frames are still good, as is the dash and speedo bezel/gauge.

Left side is pretty straight.

Ow.

The engine isn't bad. A 225 Slant Six with power steering and windshield washers. Nice little upgrades, but I wont use the power steering, I mean what's so hard about steering this car in the first place?

I was able to get an auto column with only the turn signal on it. Now I gotta get a tach.

I was able to locate the tail light lenses from Layson's after they had been on back order for a bit.

Also my floor is going to be cut up soon to make way for my four speed hump.

I have documented the few major rust locations on the car, they are mainly in the bottom corners of the doors.

I just love this

The underside looks to be pretty clean and solid.
A much better canidate than what I began with.
Keep the pics flowing.

Hey You ain't hurtin my feelings none..Keep up the good work on your lil' A

For being a Washington car, it is super clean underneath. The only rust is in the door. The floors are nice also.

I guess it wasn't Washington for long before it came to Nevada. So that helps.

The trans was a Nevada trans. An outdoor Nevada trans filled with dirt and debris. Got that squared away.

But aside from a-body parts being miserable to track down, I love this car and resto. It has been a lot of fun.

Right now we are going to fabricate a floor hump cause I cannot locate a reproduction one for an early a. Only 67+. I'm waiting on getting the correct yoke from wildcat mopars and the proper ball pivot fork for my clutch.
It's getting a little harder to get down to work on the car.

Also we are ditching the z bar in favor of newer clutch technology.

I love the resto mod idea. I also have a 65 cuda that is now running bbp 4.5 discs all round
and is sitting on 17 rims with a 275's on the back. i have left the body mostly stock, I'm running
a 390 hp 360 with a stock 4 spd.

great pics so far, keep them coming.

the repop hump will work,,just like in the 67 up you will need to trim and fit,or find a donor car and cut it out,,what type of yoke are you going to wild cat for ??all that stuff is available with out going to a junk yard,,,

as for your hood latch, hood pins would be the quickest and easiest way,,but you could always convert some other type of latch, that top bar that runs across with the oval hole, where the latch hook goes thru, could be converted to a cable sliding latch,go to a junk yard and look at more modern cars you may find some thing,,also look at some street rodders magazines for ideas on things like that,

I'm getting parts from wildcat cause my drive train is all from different cars, I have a late 70s od four speed with an early 80s bellhousing and the parts through them were more affordable on my budget.

I'm thinking the cable is what I might do. I want to keep the work Plymouth hood chrome latch in a functioning order. Do the 64/65 valiant grill emblems unscrew so it has the billet look? Or is there just a circle opening?

im not sure but probably the gril wil have a hole once the emblem is removed,, make a topic in the early A column and ask,,,

as for your mix of parts,,dont know what your geting from wild cat,,but be careful,,ive seen what they call good usable,,ive thrown out better stuff then they sell some times,,,also,,the O,D, tranny you have has a large front bearing retainer,,you will need a bell housing with the larger hole,,,or you can have it machined open if you have the smaller bell

Thanks for the heads up. So far I had no issues, except jumping on a four speed too soon. A 65 year correct one came for sale after I got my parts in line. Oh well better fuel economy.

Now here is the contradiction, should I go with the six pack slant six intake that Clifford is selling and rebuild with new cam and such to accomodate the power, or do the same and experiment with the super charger stores slant six charger?

the 65 trans you passed up has a super low first gear 3.09 i run one in my cuda and love it,,but some of those O,D boxes also have that low first gear,, plus the over drive final,, so if u have that its the best of both worlds,, i had one years ago,,and didnt know it had a low first,,tossed it,,,mutipul carbs on a slant would be kool,,so is a super charger,,,ive heard that aussi super charger kit is well over 6 grand,,,

I was looking at the supercharger store in Arizona, no prices, so I called them and then they called me back st work, but due to the time difference when I'm at work and when I get off they are closed.

Through Clifford it would be about 1200 for everything including the weber carbs for the six pack. I'd keep it real stock looking.
