1966 Dodge D/Dart ~ 'Mystery, Myth and Misconception'

-
No...I sold it to a guy who represented the guy who had it restored. He put it up on the block quite a few time trying to get big bucks for it. It, and his Trans Am D/Dart were sold as a package deal to a dealer in Washington state. I believe he sold the Trans Am car a while back and then put my old car up on the BJ auction.

Paul - I think that my old car 933 was from Banning Dodge.

Dick Carter ... aka "Johnny Dart" drove the Westlake Dodge D/Dart in Trans Am races. He also drove a Shelby GT 350 in another class. He was a Ford sponsored driver and drove the Dart as Johnny Dart.

I have no idea. Hemi Tony out of Philly bought the car and sent me the story of it being raced by Carter. Tony is the guy that I sold mine to. He sent me a picture of the guy and the car plus shots of the VIN and fender tag to verify it was a D/Dart.

Where any other cars sent to Michigan?

Alan,

The Chrysler 'Special Performance Group' wanted to make sure that
Ted Spehar and Ralph Costa were the 'primary' Racers to get D/Dart publicity.

It was a 'protected zone'.

Both 'Hodges Dodges' {Ferndale} and Van Dyke Dodge {Warren} were
both shut-out from getting an original 1966 D/Dart.

Paul,
Thanks for putting all this information together. It is GREAT. Lots of stuff I didn't know. I think Alan Lewis is going to incorporate a lot of the info into his D/Dart website.

Do you have the Dealership and what vin's they got? I have 13 vin numbers and peoples names. Ted and Ralph's car is 888.

Alan

Alan,

No good on the 'designated' D/Darts and their VIN #'s.

Two other D/Darts that I have , but have never been able to confirm.

Pasadena Dodge ~ Pasadena, Texas

Very interesting. 50 were built on the same day. Thanks for all the info. tmm

Toolmanmike,
There were 50 cars built 888-937=50

Paul,
I think Phillip Massie might have the one from Colorado. He found one in a junkyard there. I'll have to look on my other computer to see what I have on it. I believe I have a picture of the/a dealer advertisement that they stuck on it.

I have one that exists that is residing in Nevada. I'll have to check with him and see where he found it.

If I remember correctly, on another forum/thread someone asked if my car was the one that Van Dyke Dodge got. Maybe mine was suppose to go there but the guys picked it up instead. Just thinking,

I really should get a copy of the IBM card and get it decoded by Chrysler. I did all the paperwork for it around 6 years ago. It's still sitting in the computer room. Can you say procrastination.

Alan,

Do you have photo's of your car with the Headers you are questioning ?

Was the collector bolt pattern a 4-Bolt Square, or a 3-Bolt ?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alan,

They could be OK Kustom Headers {Flint, Michigan}.

They were fabricated with 'Large Primaries'.

And, they were notorious for improper bends. They hit everything and did not
fit worth a damn.

They do not look like the 'fenderwell' Hooker Headers my Father had on his 1967 Barracuda 273.

Alan,

I good time period to 'hunt' is for the 1966 NASCAR Summer Nationals held at
Dragway 42 {West Salem, Ohio}

Held > August 19, 20 & 21 {1966}

Per Galen's decoding of the car that is currently in Nevada, It was from Region 71, Dealer 58254 and he has Glendale Dodge on it.

Phillip's D/Dart was found in a junkyard in Greeley, Colorado, just north of Denver. The dealer plate on the trunk says it was sold by Ed Eisenhaur in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Gotta check with a friend that said he saw one new at a dealership in Texas. Gotta look in my files for the info. Also one that might have been at a dealership in Washington, Pa. I vaguely remember someone mentioning that one somewhere. Maybe it was bob George on Classracer.

Paul -- I have 13 vins with names and current states they are in. Do you want me to PM them to you? I have Sam Browns, Poarch and Rinaldi's.

Paul,
Got a question. Did your dad have a D/Dart that?

Alan,

No, my Father only ran Plymouth's thru 1972.

Though, he was in touch with the 'Northeast Chrysler Racing Division Reps'
during that period.

He was well aware of the D/Dart Drag 'Mystery' Package, but never ran one.

One of Bob Banning cars was purchased new by John Armstrong and raced as "The Newcomer".

Paul,
I know that some of the dealerships listed might have received more then one car. But here are a few more sighting on dealer's lots from 1966. These are from emails that's I've gotten over the years.

-- Per one of my contacts, very reliable, he said one was delivered to Lucky Dodge in Longview, Texas. He actually saw the car. It was raced at Hallsville Drag Strip.

-- A person contacted the D/Dart website moderator by email and stated, "a friend of mine had a D/Dart that was purchased new in Phoenix, AZ". He was looking for help finding it.

-- Another person contacted the D/Dart website moderator by email about one that was delivered to Mahopac Dodge or one in that area. It was raced at Dover Drag Strip. I believe his name was Paul.

Alan

1966 Dodge D/Dart

Like most of the Chrysler Racing Division decisions, the 'Special Performance Group',
did a pretty good job and spreading out the 'Special Car' Dealership approvals.

Just got a reply to an email and I have another dealership to add to the mix. Bedell's came from North Dodge in Springfield, Ohio. He said it came with a radio. I've seen picture of it when it was delivered and it is one.

Looks like that makes 35 dealerships and 38 cars. Only 12 more to go.

Paul,
Just checked the old D/Dart posts over on Classracer and found a couple of other dealers mentioned.

Jim Wahl mentioned one being from New Smyrna Dodge in New Smyrna, Fl. They might have changed the name to Dynamic Dodge later. The car was campaigned as "The Lamb Charger"

Jim Parker mentioned one being from Chuck Hutton Dodge in Columbus, Ga.

I also ran across a post where you said Ted's car was from Van Dyke Dodge. Maybe it was suppose to be delivered there but they picked it up instead.

What about the "Kandy Kane" car? Garrison, NY. Can you post some pictures of it?
Alan
