1972 Ford Mustang Mach I {R-Code} ~ "Feared by Mopar or Falafelled'

-
Cleveland motors won't touch the other Fords (302) with out compression and gears. Big ports/no torque

When I was about 14 (1982), I rode in one of the iconic yellow boss 351 cars.
It had a bit of work done to it, and it really impressed me.
One of, if not THE fastest/quickest cars I'd ever been in at the time.

Years later (1991), I bought a 71 torino GT 351-4v ram air (shaker) car- auto with a 3.5 9 inch, in that lovely "legend lime" green.
I was the second owner, and it had about 70K on the clock, with most of the original hose clamps and such under the hood, and the original polyglass spare tire.

For all the hype and legendI'd heard regarding the 351c, I really thought that car would be more of a screamer.
There is NO WAY that car could outrun my 70 383 Super Bee. NO WAY.
It handled MUCH worse as well.

Interestingly, I've never seen another 351 shaker car.
All the shaker hood cars seem to be 429 cars.

...and I'll agree about the 302. There's something about the design of the motor that makes them SCREAM for a mid displacement small block.

When the 1972 Road Runner/GTX was introduced to the public {September 5, 1971},
the 440/290 HP 'U-Code' with the Air-Grabber {Fresh-Air Package} was re-factored to
330 HP by NHRA.

The car was factored with a Weight/Horsepower of 11.14 Wt/HP which put the car
in I/Stock {11.00 to 11.49} for the late-1971 Racing Season.

In 1972, the NHRA went back to 'near' Pure Stock for Stock Eliminator and changed the
Class weight breaks.

In 1972, the Road Runner/GTX 440/290 HP {NHRA; 330 HP} was classed in
C/Stock {11.00 to 11.99 Wt/HP}, or in Super/Stock 'SS/K' {11.00 to 11.49 Wt/HP}.

They did very well in C/S and C/SA.

Eventually the 1972 '440/290 HP' was re-factored to {NHRA; 345 HP}.

Now the 1972 Road Runner/GTX {440/290 HP} is factored in at {10.65 Wt/HP}, and is
now classed in F/S or F/SA, or in Super Stock {SS/J or SS/JA}.

I pulled a 302 out of my '68 Mustang and squeezed in a stock 351c (2V) out of a '72 Cougar. With that motor it would obliterate the L60's. Not great for racing, but if you wanted to be able to mash the gas and smoke the tires through all 3 gears (with a 2.79 rear) it was perfect lol.

Note; The 1972 '351 HO" had no distinct markings on the hood.

Note; No 'Ram-Air' either. The hood scoops were formed in the hood, but they were not functional.

Note; A fresh-air vent duct was directed from the air-cleaner, that ran under the battery-tray located
near the front right side engine compartment.

In 1972, the 351/275 HP 'HO' {R-Code} was re-rated {NHRA; 325 HP}

Back in the day my girl friend's brother had a 71 Mach1. Whenever we went anywhere with him we had to sit in the back. You couldn't see out in any direction except through the front. The high back buckets were limiting our view of the outside world. So we ended up making out everytime to pass the time. I never feared the Mach1 after that.

The 1971 'Boss 351',

That's a 'Horse of a Different Color'. A very formidable foe, that if prepped
could give any Street/Stock Musclecar Car trouble.

The 1972 "351HO" was a Boss 351 with a point and a half less compression.

Coyote Jack,

Correct on the 'bulk'.

They list the 1972 Mustang 'Mach 1' Fastback with the '351 HO'.

* Shipping Weight....... #3330 lbs.
* Front....................... 57.9% {#1925 lbs.}
* Rear........................ 42.1% {#1405 lbs.}

* Curb Weight............ #3481 lbs.

How heavy if ordered correctly, though? That is: notchback body, manual steering & brakes, 351HO, 4-speed, 4.10 gears, and nothing else? :D

There was a "ford" builder in our town called "Mean Machines", we ( dodge boys) got wind of one of the first 351C's in town being built for a Mustang..

When it came out, after break-in,, part of our cruise was up a 3 lane city street that had lites every block..

In my Swinger, ended up in the Rt lane, him next left to me,, and the owner of Mean Machines far left in a 428 CobraJet, a nice green ranchero behind him, a Z-28 behind the Mustang,, and I don't remember what was behind me..

The lite went green, I hole shot em both, and when I looked in my mirror,, every-one was stopped mid block, with steam coming outta the Mustang.. I went around the block,, Long story short,, the mustang blew the flywheel going for 2nd, breaking the motor, knocked both fr fenders behind the wheels away from the body,, a piece went up by the owners knee and dented roof from the inside,, The Cobra-Jet had shrapnel, as did the Ranchero behind him.. The Z-28 cut a tire running over a pie-shaped piece of flywheel sticking outta the pavement,, and a local busines lost a plate glass window,,.

Only guy without a mark was me,, cuz I was ahead of em.. lol

a lot to be said for scattershields..

true story,,
