I have came across a complete 440 locally, for 300 dollars.

I do want to put a big block in a car down the road...

Can someone give me some info on the 440's?

I would assume the 71 and earlier motors had higher compression, and perhaps better cranks and pistons and rods?? Maybe even better heads?

The motor is said to be from 1973...

Is it worth getting?

Shane, If you plan to use it yes plus you can always put higher compression pistons in it.Another thing to consider is the lower compression works well with pump gas.

I pulled mine out of a '73 Chrysler Imperial, Cast crank, externally balanced, mine came with 346 heads, the pistons were .098 down in the bore. Which Yeilded a less then desirable compression ratio. I think I figured mine to be 7.8 but I cant remember at the moment. It also had LY rods. Is it worth getting? Mine was, I cant really say about another. If it is in great shape, and you feel comfortable with it the I would say go for it.

I pulled mine apart, re-ringed and new bearings, I had mine balanced with a new harmonic balancer and B&M Flex plate. I swapped out the heads for a set of 516 closed chambers (now a 9.3 CR) with big valves and a little porting. I used a Comp Cams XE-268H cam with a Weiand dual plane intake.

those are some of the wildest looking headers ive ever seen. And if that motors complete and has no water in the wrong places its probably a good buy. You can sit on it till you decide what you want to do and if its not the right path for ya you should be able to flip it easily.

You are right, I can buy pistons, now from what I understand a cast crank is better?

Do all the 440's have them, or will we just have to run the numbers when/if I get the motor?
 
forged steel crank is stronger but cast will support 450 horse easily.its all in the rpm range and harmonics
