273 commando??

Totally off topic, but I'm jealous anyone with a 273 commando. I'm over here stuck with the 2 barrel 1965 273.. sigh..

Nothing wrong with that. To make yours a Commando motor all you need is the solid cam, domed pistons, and apropriate 4brl and intake to fit the early heads. The valve covers would also seal the deal..

My GT is a little 225 slant six.. Well, not for long. You get the point, anything can be upgraded to perform to the owners wants/needs.

Yeah well I don't even know where to find those parts. I'm such a noobie hahaha.

Pssssst, FABO classifieds, racingjunk.com, craigs list, ebay motors in the parts/accessories section. The "search" key is your friend Cory. :-D

Yeah but I'm so mechanically retarded I don't actually know what kind of pistons or valve covers to use I'd probablyend up ordering stuff that isn't even for my engine. It's a learning process lol

Its all good man, you gotta start somewhere! Just read up on this site, you'll learn every thing you need to know and more. Theres a few members on here that are partial to 273s, they'll set you right.

The commando 273 is nothing to be jelous of.
All 273 engines had solid lifters, adjustable rockers, closed chanber heads, single plane intakes, and restrictive exhaust manifolds.
The commando package is/was mostly cosmetic. Those valve covers are nice but their aluminum fins aren't functioning heatsinks. The chrome unsilenced air cleaner wont fit other carbs without modification. The dual point distributer doesn't perform as well as modern electronic ignition. Those dome top pistons make 10.5 to 1 compersion which is too high for todays pump gas.
I'll admit I have a complete 67 commando package here all the way down to the correct fender badges. It's all just overpriced eye candy for cruise ins.

[-X

how come there are members on here and many other people that run supreme fuel and have no trouble up to about 11:1 compression? my boss runs a superchargered chev that with full boost runs between 11.5:1 - 12:1 compression off of normal supreme pump gas with no problems (93 octane), sure sucks the fuel though, typical chev!

There's more to it than static compression ratio. Head material, chamber design, camshaft design, exhaust system, the altitude where you're operating the engine, etc..... a lot of factors come into play.

A little update..
Picked up a front frame rail and cross member in great shape from chryslerfat. (Thanks again Mike!!)
Still trying to find a decent floor pan. I'm in no rush tho, the money tree needs time to grow!
Cheers!

Turn n burn..

Hello,

I was wondering if you can assist me with reputable engine sellers. I need an engine from the USA. I am based in Melbourne Australia, and with the high dollar can afford to buy an export motor.

Preferably a fully rebuilt 273 ci LA engine or if these are rare, as they are in Australia, advise on a 360/5.9L engine that would suit the same mounts as the 273 A Frame Chrysle Valiant VE model. The car has the originl engine but I need a replacement. If someone is willing to swap a rebuilt 360 I will trade them the tired but daily driving 273. Suit Dart etc.

Please pass on my details. Your help would be appreciated.

Buddy

I think if you look around some of the other forums, you'll find someone who's selling a 273. I know I've seen a few in different threads on this site. You can het them from the USA or Canada as they were sold in both countries.
I can't imagine what the shipping charge would be.
My best advice would be when you find one, talk to the person by phone and feel him out. If it doesn't feel right, then don't do bother with it.
I think most of the guys and gals on this site are here for their passion of the cars they drive or are rebuilding, not to rip others off.
Check under the classified section or rebuild threads.
Hope this helps you and good luck!
Cheers
