2BBL Carb Issue

-
I'm not even going to read that, heres why;

The current carb you have is rated at *** CFM. A larger carb would be better performing but may indeed loose mileage if it is real large. Style of carb has little to do with much on 2bbl.s. Ther mainly just for moving people around with accetable mileage over the WOT position temptation of a 4bbl.

If you want to improve your mileage, get a Edel. Performer intake and a small 4bbl carb like a 600 CFM. The primaries are smaller than the 2bbl. and if you resist temptation to stay out of the 4bbl.'s, you'll do real well.
(This is also why some guys really like a spreadbore carb, there primaries are freaking tiny.)

I also recomend a MSD for all they advertise. Better mileage, starting and the multi stiking ability for getting the most power from the air and fuel charge in the cylinder. There excellent for street engines.

OH forgot, advance the timing alittle bit as well.

Definitely not worried about mileage, my other car has a dual quad. Anyway for now I’d like to keep it looking original and thought if I put a 1970 or so year carb it might be less lean.

Lose that carb in a heartbeat! Old Carter BBD's are useless. Yours probably has the dreaded worn throttle shaft bushings which makes a huge vacuum leak. You'll know if you have that if after adjusting the timing and trying to tune it it still runs like crap and stumbles all the time. FYI those carbs were designed before automotive engineers even knew what emissions are.

If you want more performance I'd recommend a mid-70's Carter Thermo-Quad on an Edelbrock Performer intake. If you want to keep it original try to get a new remanufactured Carter BBD that you know has fresh throttle shaft bushings. Your heads probably suck though so don't expect too much.

Where can I get a mid seventies thermo-quad, which size, P/N and will it run better than a rebushed 2bbl would while keeping those sucky heads? In keeping it original looking what air cleaner would I need that still uses the hot air from exhaust tube or do I need a different exhaust manifold?

Last question, EGR or non-EGR performer or a stock 340 4bbl manifold?

Please bear in mind I know nothing about Mopar’s except that I’ve always liked them and always will.

If you want to stick with the Carter BBD, look for a pre-smog BBD.
When I was playing with the 2 bbls in my slant six cars, I liked the BBD's from a 1968 318 car. They were actually remanufactured by Holley. lol
They worked really well.

Having said that, and read what you would like to do with your car, I would go with what Rumble has suggested, and hop it up a little with a Edelbrock Performer intake, Edelbrock 600 carb. I actually had this set up in a 70 Dart, with dual exhaust,340 manifolds,H-pipe, Flowmasters, Electronic ign, and could roast the tires all the way down the street.

Sounds like you have a low mile car, and it would be hard to lose it's originality. But you can always box the stock parts, and go back to stock if yopu wanted to. My feelings say once you get the extra ponies, you wont look back.8)

Here is a pic of the 318 I mentioned.

Damn, I still can't even break my tires loose yet and I've got a cam and 360 4-bbl intake (but still the stock exhaust). One thing about the ThermoQuad, they are more "sophisticated" than most other carbs and thus are a PITA to tune; mine runs OK on the primaries but the secondaries are totally off.

Try a carb for a '67-'69 318. That's what I did for all my smoggers and it worked for me. They weren't racers, but they would start, run, and giddy up when you mashed the throttle.

Thank great I'll look in to it.

Just a thought but would a 2bbl from a 340, 360, 383 work or are they too big or too different?

340s never had a 2 barrel and the carb from a 360 or 383 is too big and the poor 318 is too rich with one of those (tried one once).
