I need to change the pick up tube on my pump to match the A body pan. The motor is still in the car and the pump needs to come off to change it. Is it going to be a problem to get the shaft that turns the pump back up in?
Ive never took a pump off that why I ask. And should the pump bolts have any locktite on them or just be torqued to spec?

My memory aint what it was but... I don't think you will need to remove the pump to change the tube. A new pump would go in there if it was mine. The pump driver wont fall out or be an issue. I cant imagine your getting everything clean and dry enough for locktite to work.

This is what the pump and pick up tube on my motor looks like, I dont think I will be able to unscrew the tube out without removing the pump.

Torque to spec should be fine. Yes you do have to drop the pump. Once you are close it may take a little tweaking for correct pan clearance.

It's no biggie stabbing a hex shaft. If you can't push the pump flush by hand easily then maybe pull the shaft, but why screw up your timing and distributor index if it is good.... Just my $0.02.

(A) snug the (2) pump mounting bolts just barely snug then (B) install the intergear shaft then (C) torque the (2) bolts. this'll locate the pump vertical alignment dead on with the shaft for a no bind smooth connection
