im putting a new cam in my 1972 340.
with #1 piston at TDC dots on crank and cam are both at 12 oclock and rotor is pointing to # 1 cyl. is this correct? I thought cam should be at 6 oclock and crank at 12 oclock, but when I do that the rotor is pointing to #6 cyl.
Im confused!! HELP!!!!:violent1:

that is correct....

everyone use the 6 oclock position cause it is easier to line up the dots...just remember the with the cam at 6 oclock you are looking at 6 firing.......and do not put the distributor pointing towards number 1 ..cause you will be 180 out....

you can easily rotate the cam back to the 12 oclock position and then install the distributor..

You really should align them dot -- to -- dot because it's much easier to be correct

But the above is exactly correct, and also applies, incidently to Chivvies and other engines

"Dot to dot" IE 12 and 6:o'clock = no 6 ready to fire

"Dots up" IE 12 and 12:o'clock = no 1 ready to fire.

the cam gear will be at 6 oclock.the crank gear at 12 oclock.dont worry about the rotor. when the dots are together the disst will be i80 out when the dots are opposite it will point at number 1.or take the #1 plug out bump it slow with your finger over the plug hole.it'll blow your finger off on compression .put the dist in pointing at # 1 it will fire up

#1 cylinder is probably at TDC on the exhaust stroke right now, that would be my guess. You need to make sure #1 is on the compression stroke TDC, cam dot at 6 o'clock crank at 12 o'clock and the rotor should point at #1 then.

wrong...

cam dot at 6 oclock and crank 12 is number 6 firing..

when number 1 piston is at tdc compression stroke..the cam with be at 12 oclock....and crank will be at 12 oclock..

Thanks for the info, I was driving the car with no issues just wanted a bigger cam but never ran into a issue like this before.
I also bought a set of X heads thinking the bigger valves would be better. I removed my J heads today and found that they had the big valves in them. so is there any other difference between the two heads?

The x heads and j heads in stock form r the same.

I already had the X heads totaly redone, so I will be using them. Looks like I will have a pefectly good set of J heads for sale, they need nothing but a new home! I just removed them from a running 1972 Charger 340 yesterday.
