360 Small Block - Very Streetable / Occasional Strip Engine Recipes

-
Just found a good running 360 out of a 77 Wagoneer, that originally came with a 4 bbl carb, which is still on it. It is complete with all brackets, alternator, A/C compressor, etc. I just visited with the owner & I am going to look at it this evening. He says it has about 70,000 miles on it. Sounds like a good platform for the money, what do you guys think?

...just stick this cam in at 100* and use a good 9.8-10.5 compression ratio, air gap intake 750-800cfm carb, at least mildly ported heads240/185-260/195cfm & some headers and 3.91 gears w3200 stall or 4.10-4.30's with 4spd.....dont forget some real tires
Ive run a lot less cam w/ slower ramps, less head flow, lesser cid, less gear '3.73' on street tires w/4spd hitting mid 13's with tires spinning
i could cough up many diff combos, but this is a good mid livel combo...and jmo at the moment.

what is a wagoneer ? Ithought they were AMC and the 360 AMC was not the same as a mopar 360 . Or did dodge make a wagoneer as well ?

wow, now that's a lot of lift, lol. I may go with a bit milder cam than that, but definitely looks like it will make some serious power.

Magnum heads
1.6 rockers
XE274
360 .40
Kb107 flat deck
Air gap
750vac

should make at least 400 and I know its faster then LS1s haha

The Wagoneer was made by Jeep, & you do raise a good point, I forgot at the moment that AMC did make a 360 as well. I'll go check the motor out anyway, but if it is an AMC 360, I'll pass on it.

Thanks for the replies, & I appreciate the detailed post Rumblefish.

This car weighs 2,535 lbs. with no one in it, & like I mentioned, as far as the transmission & rear end, I'll be building those up at the same time as the motor. Though this is a small block forum, it wouldn't hurt my feelings if someone threw in a tranny & rear gear ratio combo as well, lol.

Thanks again

I would love to know how you got your 63 to 2535 lbs.
Maybe you can show us your car in a seperate build thread.
Looking forward to your 360 build results also. I have a similar street/strip goal in mind for my 65 Valiant.

Best of luck with your build

Thank you, much appreciated. I will start a build thread once I get my engine / transmission / rear end plan squared away.

Not one suggestion on a junk yard 5.7 hemi?? If I had it to do all over again that is what I would do. you didnt say how much $$$ you were going to spend or I missed that part...

Lmao!!! I don't think so
How about a Briklin ? The AMC 360 was the factory engine . Like the other poster stated , how about a new Hemi with the 6 speed ? Would be a killer for sure ! I was thinking about it for a project , 44,000.00 for motor and trans from a scrap yard , it was for an aoto out of a 300 .

That is because it is a thread looking for advice on a 360 engine. Not what engine to use. So the answers are correct.

It is and it isnt, see the push rod geometry eats up some of the lift as well as the valve lash and roker geometry....so in acuality, you can install a .570 lift cam and only see about .520-.530 at the valve@max lift .....so now think about how much lift you'd have if you went with a .500 lift cam=.470 'maybe'. Now... the loss is less with perfect geomtEry, but u cant fix the lifter/push rod angle, thats cast into the block.

Very true, didn't think about that. Thanks for mentioning that. I'm still reading books & threads in here doing my homework before I buy the engine & the parts. I will definitely keep that in mind.
