Hey guys, I found someone on ebay who builds leaf springs. Im looking for 2" de-arched leaf springs and he said he can build them for $160 plus bushings, which is an awesome price, however he said they would be 4 leaf instead of 5leaf. Anyone know why he would do this? Will the change from 5 to 4 leafs change the ride quality? I have a convertible and Im just concerned 4 leafs might change things besides ride hieght.

I would think that it would be the material type. The guy at the suspention shop that i talked to mentioned that the original material that the springs were made is more expensive, but he said that there would not be a noticable change in ride quality if they are built right.

The older stock springs were made of better metal? Wouldnt that mean if the matal is worse on the new ones, they should use more leafs? Hmmm.

I think it was more that the older material and also thickness was not as easy to come by. If you look at some of the new trucks (really the only vehicals that still use leaf springs) they have only like 3 leafs but each one is thicker.

The number of leaves isn't the whole picture; the spring rate is also determined by the leaf thickness and some details about the shape of the springs. Not to mention that Mopars use highly asymmetrical springs with different rates left to right, and different ratios of stiffness front to rear on each side. A good spring builder will know how to pick out the right ballance, a bad one might just give you two identical springs with a rate that's more or less the same as stock. There's a lot more to this question than just spring rates - the real question is whether he knows his Mopars. Some guys copy the factory spring designs, some do actual testing on cars to see if they've made an improvement, and some just guess or try to copy the spring rate number and ignore the rest.

If he is duplicating the factory 4 leaf setup, you'll have a more softly sprung ride, not a good point for a lowered car. If he's designed this from scratch... do you trust his chassis engineering skills?

They are stock replacements Im sure. I got them in today. My guess is he just followed the factory specs on spring rate. Will see how they do.
