whats the recipe for a 400 block 440 crank think i have the parts to make but not sure also how good is the engine

planning to pull my 70 340 out of the duster and going b block/ 4 speed
 
It's an excellent combo for street or strip and even more so in a Duster.

If you have the 400 block, bore it out if needed and only if needed.

IF you have a 440 crank, you could cut it down and have the mains fitted to the 400 block. This can be expensive to do.
Otherwise, you can purchase a brand new crank just for this stroker combo easy.

Pistons are off the shelf. An easy purchase from many companys.
 
440source.com is the place to get the stroker kit. Complete rotating assy for just under $2000. They even have descent aluminum heads for $900 a pair.

I got their 512 kit for the low deck with pistons that should give me about 14:1.
 
ab7fh, what is that line in the valey for?
 
Anybody know of anyone putting one in an early-A body, like say a 66 fish? I would love to see some pics of that.

I am building one and have the crank fitted already and she is going in to be bored next. Stroker pistons 10 to 1 and some alluminum heads and there is a 450+ HP fun machine!

How big of cams are you guys using? I am looking at a 289 eddy.
 
Hey guys.. I have two of these engines and they are mucho fun on the drag strip... They both have Indy 440-1 alm heads and the one in the '68 Formula S car weights in at 3100 lbs and has gone 9.98 at 134 mph in good air at Orlando Speedworld. The other in my 68 chassis car that weights in at 2685 has ran a 9.70 at 140mph at South Georgia Motorsports Park last May at the Mopar Southern Nationals... Eagle rods and JE pistons... Really nothing wild but the ride..... 8)
 
I did a 470"/400 in my 69 B'cuda. 4.375 bore/3.900 crank,6.76 Manley H-beam, Diamond piston(10.2:1)Eddy heads. I used a Comp solid street roller,242/[email protected],.570/.576 lift. Idles at 850 w/12" vac. pulls hard through 6K. IMO these low deck strokers are a great package for our A-bodies!!
 
Those low deck strokers work pretty good8), we like our 500'' 12-1, sft cam, runs 9.60s. I really want to go a solid roller and put a kit on the motor,we're talking about doing it for next yr:headbang:.

I have a 400 bored and stroked to 499, 12.5 to 1.

It's a great motor. Needed aggregate in the bottom of the block, but I run it on the street with no real heat problems until it gets around 100 degrees outside.
 
Low deck stroker with aluminum heads would be nearly equal the weight of an iron headed small block. I was seriously considering building that for my Duster when someone told me I couldn't run 10's with a 340. Mind you this was 17 years ago when there wasn't a lot of good stuff available, so I had to prove them wrong. :)

I am putting a 451 into a 65 dart. Streetmaster mounts, notched the kmember but cutting the half moon shape on the K(back to the weld) to a square & will be boxing it back in. 68-70 B body HP ex manifolds will fit and I saw(on FABO actually) a pic of an early A w a 440 w a set of the max wedge iron manifolds which would be ungodly heavy but would flow nice(Mancini has repros). I am mating this to a 904 w a JW ultrabell. 187 pan w the idler notch
 
Okay, I ask the question, then which is the better way to go, cutting down the crank or opening up the block. I've heard good answers for both arguments. The 400 sits on the engine stand in my garage, the 440 forged crank next to it, just waiting for the job to come around so I can set this down in my brother's '81 D150.
 
my pops always tells me about a 440 crank 454 rods and buick pistons for a low buck build. all these kits take away from the build it not buy it idea. but there amazing and most of the time cheaper! im 24 and love looking at them but would rather make something work. is there a stock piston with this combo that will work?
 
I had a 451 in a 65 A. I blew a clamped muffler off when I goosed it in the tail end of a turn. Scary as I hear a terrible noise and metal on pavement. It was my muffler sliding down the street under me. Modded Pro-Parts headers and I also ran Hi-po logs. Could not tell the difference as both would just roast the 14's I had out back in any gear. It was like I had frozen pizzas back there. Logs fit a hell of a lot better but seemed a shame to use as they were restrictive, but plenty of F.A.S.T. guys run logs and turn very low ET's for full weight street cars.
