413 question

A friend has bought a 413 [ so he was told ]. The shortblock is complete & assembled, heads have been removed. Friend tells me it is a 413, but I did not measure the bore & not sure if he did. Crank dampener is for a forged crank.
The heads are #346 & exh valves have rotators. Date stamp on the block is 1972. Pistons have a dish about 1/16-1/10" deep.
Could this be a motorhome engine? Truck/marine/industrial? Surprised 413 was still being used in 1972.

the 413 was still being used in motorhomes thru the mid 70's and continued as a truck and industrial applications until something like 1979

the exhaust ro-taters are giveaway on that. just in case you didn't know, the 346 heads did not have hardened exhaust seats (unlike the 452).

NB there exists 413 industrial and marine applications that are reverse rotation. though that may not affect you down there.

Could be. Pix, including casting numbers and pad stampings at the top center front of the block may help in deciphering.

Thanks for the heads up on reverse rotation. Owner will need to check that out. We will turn the engine upside down if it is....

a reverse rotation engine when returned to correct rotation will leak excessively from the rear main seal because the knurling goes the wrong way and directs oil out the seal instead of in !

I guess it makes sense because their steering wheel is on the wrong side.

The knurling on the crank will be removed to run a silicon seal.
