416 questions

I am building a 416 i have all of the bottom end on order and i am just waiting for it to get here.

The block is a 73 340 block and i need to know if it is going to need anymore machining on the bottom cylinder areas. My machinist did not know for sure and i was planning on putting the freeze plugs and painting the block this weekend but didn't want to if it was going to have to be machined. I plan on mocking it up once the parts arive but they won't get here for another 2 weeks.

So if anyone knows please let me know.

I had to have the bottom side of the bores clearanced for the crank when I had my 416 built!

Are you talking about notching the bottom of the cylinders to clear the rods? I used Scat I-beams with my 4" crank and they cleared with room to spare. Depends on the type of rods you are using. I believe h-beams and stock rods need some notches for clearance. The Scat I-beams use ARP cap screws which have a very low profile.

I wouldn't paint or plug it until after you have mocked up everything and require no more grinding.

Once you grind on it, you really need to wash it again in a tank.

same here i used k-1 rods.

Looks like the kit from Summit comes with I beams and ARP bolts. I will probably hold off until it all shows up just to be safe.

You're right! Oops, I meant to say rods. I used Eagle rods and they needed the clearance.

Yep just a little grinding for the bolts to clear the bottoms not a hard deal to do.

Bolts or cap screws? What kind of rods? What brand stroker kit did you order?

Pretty much any I beam rod will hit if it uses rod bolts. H beams use the cap screws (no nuts) and they should clear with no mods.
