65 dart 273 starter revs when starting ?

when starting the car the starter sounds like it revs so you cant tell if the car has started
it has a new starter is there a fix for this ?

I think you might want to try and be a bit more specific, or even post a video if you can.

Its milling the flywheel. Is there a shim/plate between starter/bellhousing?
I would pull starter and see if its rubbing ring gear.
Also, when installing did you get it in straight?

i will check shimplate but i dont recall installing any , where can i get shim plates ?

I have always had one under the starter, thought it had to be there.

You know that sound the some of these old starters make after disengagement...the "run on"... sounds like a chain dragging to a halt or a more like very noisy roller skate wheel but louder. That can go on for years and not fail... though I myself would get a mini off a 1500 or something and skip the boat anchor starter.

Chevies need shims, they scream at you if they're off ... but I've never had to shin a mopar starter.

I have tightened them in the hole wrong and they will drag.
Saw a picture someone posted of a bad casting rubbing ring gear.
I know some will keep rolling til you are half way down the block but op says its louder than the engine. Mebbe he needs headers...

I have seen a few that wouldn't disengage, but those usually spin the starter to death pretty quickly.
It could also be a bendix dragging and holding the starter gear into the flywheel teeth enough to hit each other.
Who knows unless we hear it or maybe see the starter and flywheel teeth.
