i posted this under trans but no reply so thought i'd see if anyone her has any insight? 65 dart /6 904 CABLE operated. pulled stuck engine, put in what turned out ( thank God) to be good replacment /6. original trans hooked up, new fluid. starts in park moves with forward gears but NO reverse. i've read shop manual but wonder if anyone has any EASY possible fixes? also if anyone fairly close has GOOD 65 cable trans for sale i'd look at swap. i wonder if thi s car is Cristine's cousin as seems like everything about it continues to be struggle!!???? LOL

There are three common reasons for no reverse.
A misadjusted cable, or a broken rear band/strut or servo.

You will be way far ahead to just pull the pan and inspect those parts.

I was hoping mine was the shift mechanism since it went into reverse sometimes, but not all the time (for a while would go from 1-2-D to R, just not if I raised the park lever and poked R)...it wasn't. Good luck!

thanks for the reply, i hate to say it but i'm NO trans mechanic. LOL! i lived for decades up in N Missouri and had friend that was professional tranny mechanic. Now labor is so high and down here near Springfield.
i will pull pan when i warms back up some. open shed, no ocncrete and 25 yr old floor jack! not to mention how hard it is for old fart to do these things now! LOL!! thanks for the reply. maybe i can try the cable adjustment again, at east i have a 65 shop manual!! if the rEAR BAND/ STRUT OR SERVO IS BAD. CAN IT BE REPLACED WITH JUST PAN OFF?????????????? thanks BILL

The only thing you can do with the pan off is see if the rear band is still intact. If it's broken (which is fairly common) then the trans has to come out and totally apart to replace it.

As I recall, the rear band is "low/reverse", i.e. if it wasn't working I think you wouldn't have 1st gear either (check the manual). Anyway, some practical experience that might help. My 96 Voyager 2.4L lost reverse, but all the other gears worked (or at least it went forward). I know you are thinking "mine ain't no minivan", but that A-413 tranny is also a 3-speed "Torqueflite" and essentially the same inside as yours other than the differential section. After swapping in a used tranny (tougher job in a FWD), I tore apart the original for forensic evaluation. I found the only problem was a torn lip seal on one of the servo pistons. I could have easily fixed that from underneath (just need snap-ring pliers). You might not even have to remove the valve body. There is an upgraded piston (<$20) for 904 tranny's (and my A-413) that keeps it from cocking in the bore (tearing the seal). Your problem could be that the rear band just needs adjusting. Either way, remove the pan and see. Get the correct filter. Later ones will starve your rear pump and fail it.

While fixing the servo piston is easy, don't fear a tranny rebuild. After tearing the A-413 down, I decided they weren't as scary as the shop manual suggests. I later had to rebuild the used A-413 (crappy rebuilder job), then the A-604 4-spd tranny in my V-6 minivan. The later was even easier since has no bands (just more clutch plates). The shop manual makes it very easy, with step-by-step drawings. I downloaded the A-413 one free from a Neon racer's site. I recall you can find the A-904 manual too somewhere. If not, ~$20 on ebay or Amazon. I found the ATSG manual is just a copy of the Mopar one and not as thorough.

Drop the pan, and look at the first/reverse band and link. It is possible for the link to fall out, if the band has a lot of ware, and the adjustment was not tight enough. You can still have 1st gear even if the band is not working, The sprag will lock the drum in first.

thanks for the advice. i will try to get that done this afternoon, might hit 40 today, my gargae is shed with 2 sides ! bet its a little warmer is Florida!???

if you have a pressure gauge, there is a tap point on the low/reverse servo [found on the back of the trans case] it is 1/4" pipe. By installing a high pressure oil pressure gauge you can see if the valve body is sending oil to the servo thus low/reverse band apply before you even pull the pan. a zero to 300 psi gauge is required. Reverse boost pressure is quite high. Max 275 I think??? hope this helps before you get your hands dirty with trans fluid!

thanks for that info. i did find out that the 65 tranny uses a filter with 2 holes front and back, mayne i got the wrong filter there, will try to find out at parts store if i got the right one, havn't done anything to it yet, sits in shed and got a little cold and snowey here ( understatement!! LOL). i drug home a 63 fart roller and i played with it some yesterday. i have pressure gauge will have to see how high it goes.
